Problem installing a Leviton DZS15 Switch

I have an odd situation that I am trying to sort out.

I have a light that is controlled by one switch that I would like to convert to the DZS15 switch from leviton.

When I take the switch out out of the wall low and behold it is a three way switch…Unfortunately there is not another switch that also controls this light…Head scratcher number one.

So I go ahead and suss out which wires are which - The red is the common so I put it intot he back of the switch marked BK. Which leaves me with a white and a black. I put the white in the spot marked white (WH) and the black one i put in the spot marked red (RD).

All seems fine. Green LED lights up and when I click on the switch I hear the distinct clicking sound of something happening inside of the switch…UNFORTUNATELY the light does not come on.

I tried reversing the white and black wires and also tried wiring it per the labels on the back of the switch (wh to white, rd to red and bk to black). When I do this i do nto get the LED light nor do i get the audible clicking.

Would appreciate any assistance with my problem.

Thanks,
Jeff

A 3-way switch could be erroneously used in a 2-way switch circuit, but with only two wires attached to the switch.

Good.
The red is the common
Hold on sparky. That's really uncommon. Combined with the previous statement that the original switch is a 3-way switch strongly suggests that this is indeed a 3-way circuit. If your three wires were all attached to the original switch, it is definitely a 3-way circuit and all of your assumptions are incorrect.

It sounds like you got the Line and Neutral connected and the switch is working, but it's not a certainty.
UNFORTUNATELY the light does not come on.
It sounds like the wire you are assuming to be Load is not what you think it is. If this is a 3-way circuit, the functions of the wires will change.

So, you've gone beyond assuming and have graduated to random guessing. While common, this is rarely ever good.

You need to positively identify every wire in your circuit, not by color but by function. It sounds as though you have a 3-way circuit. Either you have another switch that you’re unaware of, somewhere, or your wiring is not correct. If this isn’t a new house, it’s possible that a 3-way circuit had a switch removed and nutted together improperly. But, this is a wild guess on my part and should not be assumed or trusted at all.

Positively identify the wires in the circuit. If you can’t, then get an electrician to do it for you.
