Is there any way to protect a device from being turned off? I have an appliance controller by Jasco that measures power consumption. I’d like to continue monitoring power usage, but disable the on/off functionality so that device always stays on. I also don’t want it to be affected by global shortcuts like “Turn off all lights” etc.
For now I just created a scene that monitors it and immediately turns the device back on if it is turned off. This solution only works because I have a UPS module attached to it.
Is there a better way to do it?
Which Appliance module are you working with? The GE 45603 and Jasco 12719 do not have a feature to disable the use of the relay. They also do not have an energy reporting feature.
These appliance modules do have a non-switched outlet that is always on, you could use that. But, again, they don’t have an energy reporting feature.
Your scene solution seems to be the logical solution for making a switchable relay always stay switched on, but I’m not understanding why you are using a relay or at least the 45603/12719 for energy reporting, as there is none.
Is all you want is for the device to not respond to the “All On” or “All Off” zwave commands? (Those zwave commands are a separate command class from the normal, individual device zwave on/off commands.)
If this is so, then there are ways of programming the device to ignore All On/All Off. It can usually be done by using a secondary controller.

If you start using better apps you can add protection or confirmation to you device’s. Stock app is very limited unlike the better 3rd party apps.
Main idea is for app to be wife proof - and those don’t exist.

Module I’m using is Jasco 45653 which does have the energy reporting feature. Sounds like no way to disable the relay though?

This would be a good start. What exactly is a secondary controller? Device or software?

What have you tried out? Homewave for ios and ImperiHome for Andriod work quiet well with my family.
Custom icons for what you need, layout of your choice. You can only show the devices you want and you can lock the configuration. I think its the most wife proof you can get. Unlike the stock app that just shows every device even if you don’t want her to touch it.

I don’t have an iOS or an Android device to try these out on, but screenshots look very ugly. Either way I’m not looking for a client solution. It just seems like basic functionality to be able to disable relay, but continue monitoring power usage and I was sure there’s a checkbox in the interface somewhere that I’m not seeing.

There’s no Z-Wave relay module that I am aware of that can be configured to not be switched.

A controller is a device that “controls” another zwave device. Vera is a controller, along with any other remotes you may have. In a zwave network, there can be only one primary controller, which is usually Vera. Every other controller is a secondary controller. Vera does not utilize the all on/off command class, so it cannot be used to reprogram your zwave switch. You will need to use another controller (which by default will be a secondary controller) that supports the All On/Off command class.
One clue that the controller supports that command class is if it has an “All” button. The GE 45600 series of remotes has said button, and should work (I utilize my Intermatic HA07 controller, but believe the GEs would work). Follow the instructions for the remote itself to reprogram the specific switch. This reprogramming only needs to be done once per zwave switch.
Note that if you do not have a controller or remote with an “All” button, then you are not using the all on/off command class. Then never mind.
