Potential Customer Question

Hello, I am interested in buying a home automation controller and VeraLite or Vera 3 look really good. However, I am having trouble finding the answer to one main question.

Do I have to create an account with Mios or Vera to use it?

I don’t want any cloud services. I am fully capable of managing my own network and just need an interface to connect to via my own router and secure certificates.

So again, does the interface live on the VeraLite base unit like my router? Or do I have to login to a 3rd party site in order to access my controller from their secure website? (The first several lines on the manual seems to try to sell me on how secure their servers are)

I have looked through the forum but I might have missed the answer to this question and the manuals say I need to sign up (most companies tend to say this). However, in my experience if there is a way around it they don’t make it easy to find.

Thanks for your help.

You can access it directly from your LAN via its IP as well as via the MiOS servers.

If you only want to be able to access it from your own LAN (or via alternate means) and sever it’s remote connection, then there are some steps you’ll need to accomplish to stop it from tunneling out and phoning home.

As mentioned by strangely you can use vera without using the micasaverde services. Be aware that you do need an account to download any additional plugins for your vera unit. As there are many useful plugins developed by the user community it makes sense having an account. You can still disable all other vera services.
The Vera solution is not a cloud solution, software runs on your own vera device without any internet connection. Vera offers some services you might consider to use like back ups, notifications and remote access, but you need the vera account to use these. Not sure whether you need the account for firmware upgrades.
