Has anyone got one of these? Are they any good?

I need a motion and light sensor for outside, to switch on my gate lights, but this one is not specified as external - it seems to be designed for monitoring rooms. Looking at it, how difficult can it be to stop water geting in? Has anyone done that?

I saw the Everspring SP103, but it doesn’t do light levels. I already have an Aeon 4-in-1 Multisensor, but it’s just died, so I don’t want another one!

I was looking at this one also. Not sure if this helps at all but I’m coming from Insteon and have a bunch of their motion sensors which I think also don’t look very outdoors like, but everyone on the Insteon forum said they work perfectly fine outside, that it’s a good idea to have it under a ledge or something so snow and water isn’t pouring directly on it but that it’s fine otherwise. I’d have thought water would fry it since it’s not waterproof at all, but yeah, got a bunch of replies from people saying they have had them outside in -20 weather for years no problem, so I’d imagine these might be the same. Worst case you might want to build a sort of box with one side missing to put it in if possible, so at least rain and snow have some barrier.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I was thinking along those lines. I think there are some openings on the back, so I’ll need those covered.

I think I’ll get one and see how it goes.

I thought I’d report on the Philio Multisensor I installed outside, in October.

I made a housing for it, just to stop water falling directly onto it. It is installed outside, but it’s a fairly sheltered location. Once I sorted out the settings I needed, it has worked perfectly.

I found the settings that make it report temperature and light levels at regular intervals. I set it to every 30 minutes - the lowest value you can set. I have to say, when you are checking light levels on a winter day, 30 mins is a bit long. I know they say its to minimise impact on battery life, but isn’t that for the user to decide? I set my system to close my curtains when the light drops and it can drop very quickly. 15 mins would have been better.

Anyway, it works. Motion detection is quite sensitive - I get it to switch on security lights when anyone approaches. It’s directly associated with the lights, so that there’s no lag. I can still pick up the event with Vera.

And battery life - it’s still reporting 100% after just over 2 months.
