Panasonic BL-C111A camera discontinued, replacement is the BL-C210A

The Panasonic BL-C111A camera is discontinued. The replacement is the BL-C210A. The problem is that the MCV store does not indicate this, and also that the BL-C210A retails for about $70 less than the MCV store lists the BL-C111A. I purchased a C111A from them and was shipped a C210A. I have asked for a partial refund or store credit, but have not heard a response to this request yet.

Based on independent reviews I have seen, the units are comparable in function. The C210A’s picture has been described as sharper, but not necessarily preferable to the C111A’s softer image with less picture noise. MCV does set up Panasonic cameras that you purchase from them to work out of box with the Vera. However, the $70 price difference, in my opinion, is most certainly not worth the MCV service of setting up the unit for you. $30??? Maybe… I had seen the C111A advertised for about $209. The typical prices for the C210A are from $175-$180, with more in the $175 range. The $70 price difference, a price one should be willing to pay for the MCV set-up??? Even as a no Micro$oft household, I would have used a friend’s M$ machine to do the set-up rather than pay that extra cost…

Also, the two units look different. I actually prefer the appearance and differences of the C210A, but others may not. Please research the two units before deciding whether you want to purchase the C210A from MCV at C111A prices…

I’m not sure you can do much about the price or if they’ll give you a credit (i hope they do) as maybe they should have warned you first?! If not then i would say try to get a refund, and buy it from elsewhere!

You also shouldn’t need an M$ box to set the C210A up either (i never used the included disk). All i did was find out the IP my router assigned it and then logged in via Google Chrome. I’m not even sure Vera needs any special setup either; you just need to make sure you set your router to either give it the same reserved IP or give it a static address; and finally tell Vera the IP of the camera after you’ve installed the plugin. I guess you did that last bit already anyway!

Either way its a top notch camera…
Good looks, POE (although proprietary) and great video! Even better if you have one of the newer Panasonic TV’s too as you can view it there…

Good choice, even though MCV forced you into it

My camera was properly set up by MCV. I must admit that. I needed to plug it in directly to the MCV Vera rather than through a switch as I initially did (but was not informed of that fact),… but after that, the camera performed to spec.

I actually like the camera’s physical build parameters better than the model I was intending to purchase (As I understand it the C111A did a better job interpolating a reduced 320x200 pixel resolution picture to 640x480, but was not better as a low-light camera), but not to the tune of $70 more… I would even have endured an M$ set up before paying that… (although I would have had to borrow the machine, since I won’t have an M$ machine in my house). What I am really asking for from MCV is a $40 store credit (especially if they have some harder to find scene control switches available, and it might just mean a discount. Hell, I might even be willing to pay for express shipping and handling).

Yes, I know it is possible to directly access the camera’s html setup page from a *posix compliant OS, but after having already had MCV set it up, that issue is moot.

Like I said, it does not bother me that the unit had changed (if would if I had purchased it based on aesthetics of the C111A). However, I was HIGHLY annoyed that I was not informed of the substitution (& I HAD called them regarding being forwarded an incorrect tracking ID). I would have second-guessed my purchase, based on current pricing. The way I see it,… a C111A arriving would have been fulfillment of my order. Any SUBSTITUTION should have been MY choice. Quite frankly, I would have REFUSED.

Don’t get me wrong, I support the Vera by MCV, & I love my VERA unit,… However, at this point,… I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND any purchase from their on-line store, other than the VERA itself… (However I would still advocate the purchase of a MCV Vera indirect or direct, by ANY interested person),… simply because I would earnestly recommend anything that would do good unto all persons, regardless of where their sympathies lie.

Funny thing is that as a “Travelling Man” (Freemason), I can get a parking ticket issue resolved easier than this one… Kind of pathetic that MCV would not give me the common courtesy that a so-called “inflexible” law enforcement body would do, pulling the right strings, or not. THAT is what I believe is wrong with the USA in this day and age.

It’s about CHOICE, it’s about FREEDOM (Open Source and personal configuration). That is why I CHOSE the MCV Vera in the first place, and that is why I am offended now…

I just hope MCV does the right thing,… Their open source position and attitude and sense of fair-play is why I chose the Vera in the first place, as opposed to just going with LinuxMCE. We’ll see…

But in the meanwhile,… please,… ALL OF YOU,… do proper price comparisons in light of this issue. I would not like to see ANYONE paying more for the same item, accounting for MCV’s service of setting the camera up, of course, as they could somewhere else.

That would simply not conform with my idea of right.

My Camera is not plugged directly into Vera, its actually about 2 switches down stream??

Anyway, could be worse, at least you hadn’t ordered a Vera1 and it ended up being a Vera2 with no warning
