Old reliable modules suddenly flaky

I am trying to figure out what is going on with a couple of my Intermatic appliance modules. They were very reliable for years, but started becoming flaky, the same way at the same time a couple of moths ago.

To troubleshoot I moved one closer to my Vera Lite, which by the way is on UI5. Most of the time it works correctly. Other times it takes several retries to turn on. Turning it off is far less reliable and may take several attempts to get it to finally shut off.

I have run heal a number of times but the results do not change. I?ve unplugged it and plugged it back in and I think that did the trick, but no. I turn this thing on and off several times a day and it, usually it works, but I can no longer rely on it. If it were one, I would throw it in the trash, but it is two and it started about the same time. All of my other device are very reliable.

I am out of ideas. Any thoughts?

TIA,
Chris

For testing, you moved a device closer to Vera, but did you move it close enough to test reliably?

I’d recommend that you move the device to within three feet of Vera and then exclude/include it and see what the results are. If the device doesn’t work work reliably in that scenario, but other devices work fine, then I would have to assume it is a bad device.

If the device seems to be bad, then exclude it and power it off. Then repeat the same troubleshooting steps with device number two. It does seem highly unlikely that two devices could be failing at the same time, but I’ve seen stranger things.

Well, I excluded it and then added it back in. Still has several retries with commands, and only 3 or so feet away from the Vera.

I replaced it with a new Aeon Switch and it works perfectly.

Time for the screwdriver. This is an Intermatic HA02. From a quick look, it looks like C7 a 47uf, 50V cap is bulging a bit. A bad filter cap could certainly cause flaky behavior. Maybe there is still hope.

A failing capacitor could definitely create your issue. Capacitors with a limited life could also result in multiple device failures at approximately the same time, as you are seeing.
