Nortek buys a 25 percent of MIOS

MiOS Home-Control Tech Coming To Nortek Brands

Nortek buying 25% stake in MiOS, which will continue to supply URC

Technology from home-automation platform provider MiOS will come to Nortek?s commercial and residential brands after Nortek buys a 25 percent stake in the company, Nortek announced.

Nortek, the supplier of residential and commercial control and HVAC systems, expects to close the deal in May.

MiOS said it will continue to supply its Z-Wave platform for use in home-control systems by URC, which competes with Nortek?s residential brands.

Nortek?s investment in MiOS ?will expand and accelerate Nortek’s solutions for the connected home,? as well as provide MiOS with growth capital for product development and personnel, Nortek said.

Nortek will use the MiOS platform "to develop lifestyle-driven solutions for the connected home across many of our businesses, said Nortek president/CEO Michael J. Clarke. “MiOS will work primarily with our Broan-NuTone business as well as Nortek Security & Control and Core Brands to develop these solutions for several of our customer segments, including builders, electricians, and installing dealers.”

Hopefully, this will translate to better funding for development.

I don’t see it having much impact on Vera. Although, Nortek does like to rebrand its products three or four times a year, so Vera might develop an identity crisis. If MiOS releases a Sybil controller, watch out!

Hi Guys, just to clarify, Vera is MiOS’s brand. We are one company. Obviously it is a very exciting time at MiOS!

That sheds light on what RTS stated on November 9, 2013 in the post located at: http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,17458.msg135554.html#msg135554

Congrats on the investment. Also hopeful that this may help with development $/progress.

I find it a bit puzzling… I would have hoped for MiOS to attract VC money like a honey pot given its superior concept, paving the way to the emergence of a leading player in the home automation field…

Do not get me wrong, nothing pro or con Nortek, but I do not get it… I just hope Vera will strive as an open HA system with global reach and not get blurred in a mid cap US centric corporate environment.

BTW, in an e-mail I received today from Worthington Distribution, it states:

“Elan Dealers - Vera now supported as Z-Wave Interface”

“Elan added support for the Vera Edge in a recent update. The Vera Edge is a reliable Z-Wave controller with broad device support and simple setup. It is a great way to add Z-Wave lighting devices and locks to an Elan system. Z-Wave network setup on the Vera Edge hub is done via a browser interface, so there is no need for additional software. It also features step-by-step walkthroughs instructing the installer on how to add many popular devices.”

Agreed that it’s surprising Vera hasn’t garnered more private equity dollars. At 25% investment, hopefully there won’t be too many chefs in the kitchen, though I would expect that money to come with some strings.

Was Nortek using MiOS as a platform? My guess they are investing in the OS more than the Vera controllers.

Either is a bad investment IMO. ;D

why ?

why ?
Because integlikewhoa has moved from Vera to another platform. He/she made it well known their distaste for vera and has now started trolling this board.

That’s a great assumption which is true to some extent, but I still use VERA daily at atleast one house.

And the comment was made more on the fact of recent troubles and issues dealing with the software that they are buying into. Let’s hope the outside money gets used to fix the current problems.
By the way there hasn’t been any firmware/software updates since January to even make an attempt to fix anything.

Every step to makes things better is better. Was it expensive, the 25%. And what was the aim from Nortek

Here is a third party view with interview statements from both sides on this subject.

Nortek, the supplier of residential and commercial control and HVAC systems, made its second acquisition in as many months, this time purchasing a company that developed a natural-language processing platform for voice control. Nortek purchased 100 percent of Redmond, Wash.-based Nuiku, and it might not be Nortek?s last acquisition.
