No Ready light on VeraLite, "Data not loading?" in UI5. Bricked?

Hello,

New Vera user who managed to brick his VeraLite yesterday. :frowning:

I was messing around with the ERGY function, and the Vera… just stopped responding. At this point, it powers up, but the yellow READY LED never comes on. The red fault LED comes on sometimes, but not always. Power and LAN are always on. USB logging is enabled, but I don’t know how to access the logs…

Unit replies to PING, and loads UI5, but stops with the “Data not loading?” error.

I can connect it via SSH, via both its regular LAN IP and 192.168.81.1. Unfortunately, I cannot log in, since I don’t know the root password. Also, I don’t know if it’s a symptom, but the battery compartment gets really really hot. I’m assuming the main CPU goes into some infinite loop which keeps the CPU utilization very high.

Also, the weird thing is that the unit seems to work (i.e. the ready light comes on and flashes appropriately) in battery mode. I was able to disconnect the Vera, turn on the battery mode, and add a switch and a dimmer. But again, ready light never turns on in regular AC powered mode…

Questions:

  1. Since it’s a VeraLite, without wireless, there’s no default wireless password that doubles as the SSH password. Is there a way to recover the SSH password based on its serial number, or perhaps from something printed or stickered to the PCB itself?

  2. Is there a way to factory reset the thing without resorting to SSH? I tried pushing, double-tapping, holding, and even doing the 30-30-30 reset a la what DD-WRT folks recommend with the deeply recessed button next to the “-” button on the Vera, but to no avail…

Thanks,

Alex

There are a few ways to work out the SSH password, but the easiest way would be if you saved a backup at all? If so then if you can extract the backup then you will find the SSH password in the cmh.conf file.

If not then there’s another couple of ways that we can document!

To reset, there is a hole next to the green minus button, just poke something through here that can reach the reset button on the board and double tap it rapidly; it should then reset it!

Thanks for your reply!

I tried double-tapping the recessed reset button even before I posted the message. No response.
Is there a particular step in the boot process that I should double tap during? Double tapping with the unit booted up (and unresponsive) doesn’t do anything.

With regards to backups - I’ve only had the Vera for < 24 hours before it crashed. No local backups. Could I check if any backups have been uploaded to mios.com?

Lastly… is it possible to use the Vera3 recovery procedure (http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/Firmware_Flash_Vera3) to do a firmware recovery on a Veralite, or do the Vera3 and Lite use different firmware images?

This should work with Vera Lite as well. They use the same firmware.

I tried using this link after my veralite brick to reflash the firmware. I had an error segmentation fault when the veralite boots up (Seen via serial terminal). The firmware I used is

http://download.mios.com/firmware/os_rt3662/openwrt-ramips-rt3883-veralite-squashfs-full-81.bin

Any body had any experience trying UI5 firmware for recovery … if yes any link to the firmware ?
