Newly bridged vera--adding devices to slave/failure to enter learn mode

Just purchased a second vera to be able to extend our network outside the house. Set it up as a slave to my main vera and everything seemed to go ok–it’s showing up as a device.

Dumb question, but to add new devices to the slave, do you do this through the UI, or must this be done manually on the vera? I added an appliance manual and range extender through the UI with no issues, but when I tried to add a second appliance module through the UI I’m getting a failure to go into learn mode error.

I tried to add manually and I get the quick blinking light on vera–looks like it’s working. But when I try to control the device, it says “Invalid service/action/device.”

Also having some difficulties with a Yale lock, but I know these have their own peculiarities, so thought I’d stick with the easy appliance modules…ha!

ETA: Crud, now my unit is showing up with power light orange and rest of lights green. Submitted a ticket yesterday to vera and no response yet. Tried to call them and the tech support line sends me to vm and the vm keeps cutting me off as I’m leaving a message. If it weren’t so annoying it would almost be funny.

Wondering if you can just expand a bit on what you did here? It sounds like you have it as a secondary controller rather than bridging your two Veras?

Sure, I may be getting the terminology wrong. I followed the instructions here:
http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/Bridged_Mios_Engines
Basically, went to Add device>Add Control over another UPnP device and added the vera.

It’s showing up on my device page–listed as Mios with it’s serial number.

OK, that’s fine, “bridged” it is.

This means that you have two separate Z-Wave networks. You can only add new devices by putting the correct Vera into include mode - either by the hardware button on the device, or using the UI (low or full power.) You should ensure that the new device is not already included in a different network (they don’t always come with a “clean slate”, so best to reset them first.)

That’s the way it should work, anyway.

Also, have you tried restarting both machines?

Yes, I’d restarted both systems. I was actually just able to reach a person at tech support who did something to reset the vera and is updating the firmware. After the reset, looks like it’s at least functional again. I’ll start fresh adding devices and see how I do–thanks for your help!

Just wanted to close the loop, in case anyone else encounters this issue. I’m still not sure what the underlying problem was, but ended up requiring over an hour of tech support time to fix it, so definitely not something I would have been able to work out on my own. When I was able to reach them, they were great. Would recommend going directly to vera if you’re having any of the issues I experienced.

I had a Minimote that “lost its mind”. The scenes it was invoking were NOT the scenes programmed.

No problem, I’ll just update the Minimote firmware to the latest, reset the device, remove it from my Zwave network, and re-add right?

Not so fast. My Vera 3 gave me that frustrating “failure to enter learn mode” error. Nothing I tried would re-add the Minimote until… I pushed the Scenes → Settings → Z-Wave Settings → Advanced → Hack to convert 2.78 to 3.20 button. Eh? My Zwave network “upgraded” to something 4.x??? and now I can add my Minimote.

I grabbed this tip from the forums, and wanted to post that it did the trick for me.
