Looks like they could be a real competitor to Vera now that they have a local app engine. That was the big thing that made me not choose them (internet goes out, HA goes out). Still waiting on full specs and pricing:

Will be interesting to see how this hub will compare to Vera’s new one (VeraPlus):

Looks like this answered some of my concerns about SmartThings. Still wondering about “premium” services. They mention notifications… I hope they won’t make you pay the premium for them. Then again, I think they have an IFTTT integration. Wouldn’t be instantaneous but could work for notifications.

I’m using smart things and am not impressed. Yeah the interface looks cool but it’s flaky and limited and they seem to be relying om the user groups to add the functionality. Adding support for local control is a must and I’m glad to see it in the new device but the videos and documents I’ve seen for Vera have me over here looking at switching. Smarthings looks good and is usable with little fiddling out of the box but it’s limited in it’s capabilities and is not at all reliable.

Maybe Samsung will fix that or maybe they will play with it for a while integrate some of it into one of their products and scrap the whole line.

Maybe I’m just jaded but I’m not really a fan at the moment.

Amazon is offering the hub for $99 now. I’m wondering if that means a new version is coming.

I hope this premium subscription service does not strip away services we are already used to using for free.

It won’t. No one will be required to pay a subscription either. These are brand-new features that we’re introducing and offering as an option for people to choose.
