New Setup/Configuration Recommendation needed

I am new to the ZWave product and I would like to do the following:

I need to monitor a house and allow me to control the thermostat. I also have several IP wireless cameras I would like to integrate (Cameras are Foscam). The goal is to monitor the home remotely and to control the thermostat, get alerts for motion detection and any other configurable alert that is available.

It appears that the Vera 2 will accomplish this, however, I am reading conflicting articles that state the user must login to the FindVera.com website to use the system.

Question 1: What do I need to buy for the above configuration?
Question 2: Is this configured to work with your own DNS account or do you have to use FindVera.com after you have successfully installed the system.

What you are looking for is possible with Vera. The foscam cameras work great with the system. I have several being used right now. A great camera at a bargain price.

Answer 1:
You will need a Vera unit and a thermostat that supports the z-wave protocol. You will need to make sure that the wires for your thermostat have 5 wires (w/ common wire usually blue).

Answer 2:
For remote access there are several ways.

  1. You can use cp.mios.com (was findvera.com)
  2. Use ssh and port forward to the vera unit
  3. Open up the ports on your firewall to allow http access to the vera unit using your dns account (not secure).
  4. Create a vpn setup
