I just got my Vera Lite and ordered a few GE Z-Wave switches. When I went to go install i noticed i do have neutral wires that are twisted together with and secured with a nut. I noticed the switch has two holes on each of the connections. Can I connect both of the neutral wires to the switch or do i need to run a wire from the nut to the switch?
The Neutral wires that are connected together will be connected to the neutral terminal of the Switch. If there are two holes at the neutral terminal, you can just insert each neutral wire into the hole these holes are connected in the swtich. Otherwise (like mine), you can connect another wire into the newtral wire nut and conneect it to the switch.
You lost me.
sdaltman82 - I’m pretty sure you run a new neutral wire to the neutral bundle, and on the terminal at the switch you can attach the wire in either hole.
For the forum: are the two holes on these terminals for daisy chaining? What’s the deal with those?
I don’t know if it’s “to code”, but anytime I found two neutrals in the wiring box, I took off the existing wire nut, cut & stripped new tips, and put those in the GE switch, clamping down on both.
I figure the switch takes the place of a wire nut and keeps me from having to add a third leg.
(If there was more than two, I did add another wire to the existing nut.)
I tightened the screws really snug, and looked at how they’re constructed inside… I figure they have to be doing at least as good a job as the wire nut.
I’m having an issue wiring up my GE z-wave switch. I too have a neutral bundle in the back of two separate gang boxes I intended to install two of the GE switches in. I had a “spare” piece of electrical wire and tried to use that to wire the switch from the neutral terminal into the neutral bundle. However, I still can’t get the switch to work. I was thinking perhaps the piece of scrap wire I had used to try to hook up into the neutral bundle was bad or the wrong type perhaps? Is all electrical wire the same? Is there a specific type of wire I can pick up at home depot for this purpose?
I thought it would be pretty easy to get these switches wired up once I knew I was supposed to add a wire to the neutral bundle but so far these are giving me quite a problem.
Agoodman-
You may have line and load reversed.
I agree with Mjolsen, sounds like Line and Load are reversed. If you have two GE switches in the same box, you can run the neutral from the bundle to the first switch, then come out of the second little hole on that switch at the neutral terminal and run a wire to the next switch. This way you don’t have to add two neutral wires into the existing Neutral bundle…
Thanks guys,
I’ll try reversing the line and load but I think I already tried this with no results. If that doesn’t work maybe I’ll post a picture here and someone with far greater electrical knowledge than myself can help me figure out what I’m doing wrong here.
Remember, you can’t “see” electricity unless you are using a multi-meter! (or a voltage stick). I would obtain one of these first and then begin troubleshooting!
