Metering only (no switching) insert module?

Hi,

I have been through all the hardware brands (Düwi, Aeon Labs, Everspring…even Qees who say they are going to deliver their product since 2 years), and I haven’t been able to find a small insert module that wouldn’t switch on/off, but just meter the load.
The idea is to be able to put one behind a wall plug, without risking to turn it off (eg. fridge), or for plugs only occasionally used (on which in every day life no one plugs an external Z-wave module).

Do you know if there is any plan for such device? (this about EU/220V products).

Alternatively, can the happy owner of the Aeon Labs Smart Switch tell me whether it saves the last position after a power outage? (I am assuming US/EU devices behave the same way).

Thanks!

Just came across your post while searching for Fridge ideas. I have an Aeon Micro Energy Switch (UK voltage). It does seem to restore back to powered on state after a power cut that I had this weekend.
Another option I am going with is CurrentCost IAM device, via EnviR plugged into Vera USB port. I decided on this because there is no off/on switch, and they are less than half the price of the Micro Energy Switch (except that you also need the EnviR monitor and USB cable). I was able to pick up the EnviR monitor quite cheaply off eBay.

Hi,

Thanks for your tip. I bought some EON Labs switches since this post. They are very good, but the idea of turning them off with Vera by mistake still doesn’t make them really practical for devices such as fridges.

I already have an RfxTrx (Rfxcom USB) device plugged to my Vera (for cheap Oregon Scientific temperature modules), so I would like to avoid adding another USB device. This CurrentCost IAM is an interesting option though, I am sure some here will find it of interest.

However, good news ;D:
A few weeks ago, Fibaro released their Z-Wave wall plug (http://www.fibaro.com/en/the-fibaro-system/wall-plug). Not only is it gorgeous, but it also has an ‘Always on’ mode, set by changing one Z-Wave parameter (see “Advanced functions” in the manual: Wireless Smart Home and Home Automation | FIBARO ).
This is exactly what I wanted, so I’ll probably be buying this module soon. It’s not an insert behind the socket, but it’s small enough for my purposes.

I have read somewhere than they are going to release a 110V / US type plug version. Unfortunately, I have not heard anything about a UK version…my guess is, given the size of the UK sockets, this would require a complete redesign.
So in a nutshell: this won’t help you in the UK unfortunately, but I am posting this in case anyone on the continent is interested.

Very cool. Thanks for the info.
As long as I use the right socket & plug adapters, I can make this work for me in the UK. (Volts & Hz are compatible).

Well, it’s a bit too beautiful to be put between 2 humongous UK-EU/EU-UK adapters, and too expensive to hide. Hence my assumption you wouldn’t be interested. But if you are, I am glad I could help

Another tip I got from online reviews. This may be of importance for your choice of adapters:
The Wall plug is available in 2 versions: EU-Schucko (Type F, Germany & most countries, with earth contact areas on the top and bottom sides, and EU-Type E (France, Belgium… with a central earth pin).
It is important to note that:

 • The plug type on the device side is of the chosen type, depending on the model
 • However, on the “wall-side”, the Fibaro Wall Plug is - as 99% of all EU devices now - compatible with both type F and E sockets (meaning it has side contacts for Schuko, and a central hole for the French type plugs).

If you don’t know what I am talking about, see http://www.iec.ch/worldplugs/typeF.htm & http://www.iec.ch/worldplugs/typeE.htm

Have not looked to see if my (US) Aeons do come back to their last state after a power outage. Do have the same wish that they had put a Z-Wave parameter in there to disable the on/off feature. (Using them for the fridge, server rack, HVAC, …)

Did play with the Fibaro wall plug. Vera 2 + 1.5.622; appears to work fine. Didn’t try the Always On feature. BTW, you can set the color of the ring in the on state and flash when a certain power level is exceeded.
