I have a VeraLite running the latest version of UI7. I have next to no plugins loaded (log info, virtual on/off switch and day or night only). After a reboot, if I log in and run the free command, I have about 20MB free memory. Seems to be about normal. I’ve been checking this daily of late and have noticed that this figure drops a couple of MB every day and is never recovered. I’ve seen it drop as low as 5MB and things were getting sluggish. I’m using a flash drive for logging (in case that’s relevant).
I’ve read a bit about this on the forum but I’m still not clear if this is normal. Is this a UI7 problem or does it happen with UI5 also? What about vera3? Twice the memory so does that just buy you more time before memory is completely depleted or is memory management improved on this device over the Lite?
I can put in a workaround to have the device reboot itself on a regular basis. Is this common practice? I think it must be because I don’t get much more than a week of uptime before it becomes essential.
I’ve had a bad experience in terms of free memory impact and USB logging, documented (with hard graphical evidence) here http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,25564.msg180607.html#msg180607. YMMV, but for me, that’s a smoking gun.
Having dealt with that problem, and a few misbehaving plugins, I typically run for months without rebooting, and sometimes up to a month between restarts (which is the best you can get, at least on UI5, since Luup has a built-in monthly restart.)
on ui5 when i turned off usb logging i got back 10m
You are looking at a static picture … with out a USB stick free memory has a large swing … and often that swing will cause Vera to crash.
The 10m of memory that is used limits these memory swings … If you crash with a memory stick installed … it’s time to start removing plugins!
A large part of the memory swings are the Vera Log file, and with a USB installed the log files get sent to the USB drive.
Thank you RTS, I was getting that info from System Monitor plugin. I turned the usb back on. I didn’t have any crashes either way, I am trying to keep from having any problems as I build my VeraLite system. I read something in the forum where someone claimed usb hurt memory sometimes. They had a program to graph the memory, but I couldn’t figure what the program was from the post.
I might try without USB logging then. Its the gradual decrease in memory over time with next to no plugins installed that concerns me. Live with it or is there a solution?
In releases previous to UI7 there was a known memory leak when you have scenes scheduled for regular time intervals (i.e. every hour). Scenes scheduled for a specific time were okay.
Do you have such scenes? That problem may not have been fixed yet.

Yes I do! I didn’t know that. I’ll try disabling them temporarily and see if that fixes it. Thanks.

What’s your source on this? I never heard of such an issue!?
I am observing the same problem. The free memory just keeps on dwindling down but goes back up if I modify and save the interval scheduled scene. If it was a known problem, it needs to be fixed.
