Looking for a built-in light/speaker combo. Anything available like this?

I’ve recently remodeled a home, and as I went, I replaced all light switches with zwave dimmers, all can lights with LED cans, etc. I am now looking for a whole home audio solution. I have run some speaker wire to most rooms, however there are several rooms where I didn’t open the walls and therefore don’t have speaker wire available. While looking for a whole home audio solution, each product I come across has certain limitations. Obviously a fully wired solution isn’t an option in my case. Something like a Sonos seems like a good idea, but I would prefer something with a more “built-in” look, if that makes sense. Here are my questions for you guys:

  1. Does anyone make a can-light speaker? I’ve seen several screw in light bulbs with bluetooth speakers, none that would look good in a ceiling though.
  2. Does anyone make a connected light switch that would also be able to communicate with said speakers? I was thinking of something like a keypad for traditional whole-home audio setups, but could replace a light switch and control both light and speaker.

After a lot of thought my ideal system would be a speaker/light combo that could replace traditional lights, that could be controlled both through an app like my zwave devices, but also be controlled at the switch. My goal with automating my house has always been for all functions to be able to operate without the need for an app.

Is there anything like this out there? Does anyone have some kind of system similar to this? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Unfortunately, I can’t give additional insight to this question, but I did want to bump it up to see if anyone else has had recent experience.

There certainly are several Bluetooth/light combinations in the market now but most of them require a custom application to control. With the release of Vera Plus and the Bluetooth its Bluetooth capability, perhaps this will be revisited.

My guess is that even if those worked, the sound would be pretty minimal… so I guess it depends on the type of sound you want.

If you want a truly built in look… and can run cable… wall speakers are easy to install and can be fairly inexpensive and still sound good. Of course, what gets expensive is how you hook it up from the ‘source’ end. SONOS connects would be great… but get costly.

I use SONOS, and for my inwall speakers, I used a switch box at my amp where the wires terminated. Of course, I must play the same audio on that setup, but that’s not an issue in my house. I also have several other zones with separate SONOS speakers for that need.

To that end… the SONOS 1 works well, sounds good, and is easily hidden in a room somewhere… so you might just go that route and call it good.

There is an in-ceiling ceiling solution for Sonos. Not sure about price though. All it needs is power run to it.
