Leviton Vizia + Wiring

Hello,
I’ve looked here for help, but the post I found was pretty old so I hope it’s ok to start a new one.

The Lutron Vizia timer has 5 (FIVE!) wires coming out of it: Black, white, red, yellow (for 3-way) and Ground/green.

Having only the most basic understanding of home wiring, I thought I could get this to go. The switch I’m replacing had a yellow and a blue wire-- the yellow goes up to the light, the blue came up from the panel.

So I figured (based on the wiring diagram in the instructions):
SWITCH’S RED to my BLUE/Panel
SWITCH’S BLACK to my yellow (up to the light)
SWITCH’S GREEN wired to the box somehow (no ground wire present)
SWITCH’S YELLOW-- ignore (not a 3-way)
BUT! There’s NO white/neutral in the box! The instructions require wiring the timer to a white/neutral.

Any thoughts on what to do?
And thanks!

@NewGirl,

Welcome!

Leviton, Lutron, timer? ??? Doesn’t sound like a Z-Wave device. Not sure you’re on the ‘right’ forum. But anyway, is it a VPT24 or something like that? If it requires a neutral, well, then there’s no way around it. You’ll have to get a neutral into that box if there isn’t one. Also, check the switch’s black; that typically (with Leviton) is the line / connects to what comes up from the panel; and the switch’s red typically goes to the load.

oTi@ is right on all counts.

1st, you need a neutral wire.

2nd, instructions should be included but if not you can get them from Leviton’s site: http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ibcGetAttachment.jsp?cItemId=qoaRoyladhvy4zg3RsANaA&label=IBE&appName=IBE&minisite=10251. This is assuming it is the VPT24 which is the Leviton Vizia timer as you stated.

3rd, switch’s black should be the wire from the panel (blue ‘line’). Switch’s red should be wire to the light (yellow 'load).

Yup, people need to understand that many of the manufactures have two lines of electrical devices, the “regular” ones such as Leviton Vizia and Cooper Aspire, then the Z-wave enabled versions that usually have an “RF” designation, such as Vizia RF and Aspire RF.
