I just installed a leviton Z-wave switch in my bedroom that controls the light and ceiling fan. When I removed the standard switch the neutral was not attached to the switch. I wired the z-wave switch with only the red, black and ground and when I shut the breaker the light wouldn’t turn off. I then got a spare piece of white wire and added a pigtail from the three white wires that were nutted together then I attached it to the switch. Everything seems to be working fine, the only issue I am having is when I turn the switch on the light comes on and the fan turns even thought it is off. The thing i just thought of though is that the fan has a remote and is only off from the remote not the pull chain. I just want to make sure that there will be no issues (i.e. fire) Thanks for your help and hopefully I have been clear in my explanation.
Everything sounds normal.
I would assume the reason the light wouldn’t turn off when you shut the breaker is because the light switch itself is powered, and therefore requires a white wire to operate. The switch was presumably shipped in the ‘on’ position, hence the light staying on. Now that the white wire is attached, the fan/light operates correctly. I’m guessing that if you switched the fan off with the remote, it would turn off.
I don’t think that you have an issue, but this is far from a guarantee. The only way you could be sure is to check with an electrician.
