Leviton launches Universal Z-Wave Dimming Switch

Hooray! A Z-Wave dimmer in the Vizia RF Plus line that supports LED, CFL, incandescent and halogen bulbs. From what I can tell, this is an updated version of the low voltage switch VRMX1.

I just ordered myself 8 of the VRMX1 yesterday. I wonder if i’ll be getting the new version or the old version.

Looks like Amazon dropped the price by 50%… might not be a good sign. Maybe trying to move old inventory.

If the new firmware switches still go for about $90, then that means they realize they have to compete with Cooper 3-wire dimmers that have just as much features but for half the price. Competition is good

Amazon is still showing old information about the product and is listed it under the same product ID. I bought one of the older ones (Amazon said I bought one on 7/1/2013) and my complaint is that the LEDs I have buzz with it. I’m hoping the updated one yields better results. I may have to pick up a few to try them out.

Just to be clear, Leviton has always had a dimmer that works well with LEDs… you just had to pay a premium for it compared to the competition.

Has anyone tried the VRM10-1LX yet? If so, I have a couple questions:

  1. What is the model # to the corresponding unit for 2-way?

  2. Can you use screwed face plates?

Thanks!

  1. I do believe that all leviton z-wave dimmers use the same remote (And I remember reading it when I was looking up the new version of this switch). That is the VP00R-1LZ
  2. They are standard switches as far as face plates. You can use the screwless or the old fashion face plates. whichever you prefer. They actually do not come with a face plate (That I know of).

This is an issue… Is this just a relaunch of the old product that was labeled as magnetic only when in fact it was universal, or have they refined the functionality of the old product to become universal. If the latter they should have changed the part number. There will be all kinds of channel inventory issues…

Product Management 101, change the part number if form, fit, or function changes…

Likely the “part number” is different, it’s the model number that hasn’t changed. For instance when they switched their switches to support beaming, the part number started with 031 instead of 001 which the non beaming supported one had. (they also changed the box color from blue to green)

Unfortunately for the consumer, unless you know what you’re looking for, you won’t know until you get it home or until you need it and see it’s missing (like the beaming in the other switches).
