Leviton DZS15-1LZ

Right; as alluded to, I think there’s multiple ways, possibly depending on whether the device participates in Z-Wave scenes, possibly firmware, possibly which Vera UI, etc.

I had tried two dimmers in current use: they sent the scene actuator messages. They are also used in Z-Wave scenes / with Leviton controllers. Additionally, I tested a standalone device on a clean test Vera. This was a VRMX1 on Vera3 with UI7 RC. It produces a hail (0x82 0x01), Vera asks for status (0x26 0x02), the VRMX1 reports the status (0x26 0x03). Repeated for a VRP03. Same thing.

My impression always was that the hail mechanism is kind of the old way of doing it, and is inefficient, as any controller would have to go ask for the status / poll the device, as opposed to the device just pushing out the current status to all controllers.

I can see how multiple mechanisms may be (quietly) supported, one may take precedence, etc. It would need further analysis. However, in regard to the DZS15-1LZ, it may not change anything, as it appears Leviton chose to remove/disable certain 2-way functionality, possibly by removing/disabling association support, as you pointed out.

It's been my assumption that the NIF is used as pseudo-hail for the GE's, as I don't know what else is used as trigger for Vera.

So I would think the same mechanism can be used for the Decora Z-Wave devices. Not sure what the trigger is for Vera not currently doing that. (Did you try with poll set to non-zero? Perhaps other info needs changed / can be faked, as Vera currently treats these as ‘Leviton’, but needs to distinguish between Vizia and Decora?)

It appears that the key here is the manufacturer ID: if Vera sees Leviton she’ll assume instant status and disables said mechanism.

It also turned out that the devices (DZS15 and DZMX1) report being busy directly after a physical button press.

Please give the following product customization file and PLEG a whirl (mutatis mutandis). It will override the manufacturer ID, do its own button press detection and subsequently do a delayed poll (2s for the switch, 3s for the dimmer).

Install the customization file first, do a reload, and verify that the switches now show as being model DZS15 and the dimmers as DZMX1. Then do the PLEG. Take care to insert the proper device IDs in the LUUP. The example is for one switch (devID 17) and one dimmer (devID 16). Do a reload after setting up the PLEG.

I vaguely remember the “BUSY” thing impacting another type of switch, but it was a long time ago, maybe 4-5yrs. Don’t recall what MCV did to get around it at that time.

Attached is a pure-Lua version of the hack, derived from yours but it only needs to be installed/inserted into Vera’s startup Lua. It re-uses your .xml product definitions.

Thanks for looking at the proof of concept.

Thought I’d try new school and do a PLEG for the PoC, but not sure how to generalize that within PLEG, so figured a pure Lua impl would be better overall for a published hack (so now it will attach to all DZS15 and DZMX1 automatically). Thanks for providing the alternate version. 8)

FYI, a commenter on Amazon said that these do send out Instant Status and that his SmartThings hub recognizes the signals. It’d be nice if the Vera supported this natively. I have quite a few of these switches and would like to get them to report instantly. Did your solution end up working? I don’t really know what to do with the files as I’m pretty new to the Vera and home automation world. Any chance you could provide some instruction? :slight_smile:

Ah, got it working, you’re AWESOME, been wanting this to be instant for so long!! It took me a while to get it working as I set polling to ‘0’ on the devices thinking that they wouldn’t need to be in the polling loop, but then the polling from the code wouldn’t work either. I set it back to 60 seconds and now it works instantly!

How do you get instant status? I tried 60 seconds and it does not work.

I just got off the phone with Leviton. They are going to talk to a product engineer and get back to me on if instant status will work on a non Wink controller.

Of course they never called me back. I can’t get any status update at all no mater what I set the polling to. I tried 10 secs, 20 secs, 30 secs, and 60 secs. Hell could freeze over and it will not give me any status update if I switched the light at the switch. If I hit in the control panel to poll it then the status will updated right away. But setting the polling frequency does nothing. Any suggestions? I am started to regret getting the cheaper model now. The Vizia RF+ works correctly with no issues. The one they claim is just for the Wink does not work right. Maybe they really did make it work just for the Wink even though it says Z wave on the package.

I just installed the 2nd Leviton DZS15-1LZ into my house, and it’s working correctly. Updates aren’t as “instant” as the real Leviton Vizia RF+ version of the switch, but they take about 6-8 seconds to propate and been seen (from switch, through Vera, all the way to AutHomation’s UI).

They seem like a reasonable alternative for places where true instant-status isn’t needed, but where sub-10sec responses are OK.

I am moving to a new apartment and the wiring has just been finished. I am supposed to order switches and dimmers this week and I was wondering if you think is a good idea to buy the new Decora z-wave or is it a safer bet to go with the Vizia RF+?

For $20 more it might be better to get the RF+ version and not the Wink version. It seems to work better for me. I got a Slickdeal for $44 but normaly there are $70 something. I wish I got more when the price was low.

What steps should I take if I already have the switches installed? Do I need to remove them from Vera, follow your steps, and then add them back to Vera? I would prefer not to do that because I have lots of them…but if that is the only option, I will have to do it.

The Lua code looks at the Model string associated with each Device, and attaches itself to those with a well-known string. In theory, you can edit this setting directly using the Advanced Settings dialog of the Switches/Dimmers involved, and then performing a (save) operation:

I’m trying to get this tweak going on a Vera Edge with UI7. The time it takes for the switch status to update is pretty slow after installing the WinkHack and related XML. As a novice, hear is what I picked up thus far. Please help correct my understanding.

The Problem:

  1. When installing the switch, Vera recognizes it as a Leviton and assumes it is the RF+ line and not the Decora
  2. While both versions are “capable” of instant status, the RF+ and the Decora communicate status updates using different protocols/codes. I say “capable” because the Decora is apparently instant status when monitoring with a Wink controller.
  3. In this sense, the Vera cannot interpret the status update sent by the Decora because it is expecting/understands the status update using the RF+ protocol

The Solution:

  1. When the Vera starts, iterate over all the devices and pick out those with Model names that indicate Decora (DZMX1)
  2. Change the Manufacturer Info and and Node Info for these devices to be different than the default RF+ code (ie change ManuInfo from 29,6915,820 to 9998,6915,820)
  3. Have Vera “watch” these devices for any value change. When a value change (some change in load) occurs, poll the device and get the status (on/off). This runs continuously with a 3 second delay?

I’m sure there are some flaws in this logic but I don’t see the purpose of the .xml file.

I’m trying to understand the root problem so I can be more efficient debugging this on my end. No matter what I try I cannot get this working. Would really like to have the update/poll to work as I’ve installed quite a few and would rather not remove and exchange for the more expensive line.

I just installed 2 DZS15 in a new house and I have an issue. Can someone tell me if I’m doing something wrong?

I just did my installation in two setups 1) Single switch and 2)3 way setup in staircase with remote VP0SR-1LZ.

My problem is that when I switch the lights off, the bulbs don’t shut completely off they just dimm to a minimum level. When I turn them on they switch on good, but again off won’t shut them off completely you can see a minor glow in the LED.

I tried with 6W Led MR16 spots, and custom led round lights that illuminate the stairs and the results were the same.

I haven’t even plugged the Vera 3, I was just physically installing the switches and got concerned if this is going to kill my lights. I don’t understand why the switch is passing through some minor voltage to the bulbs.

This sounds like a wiring issue. Are you sure you have the Neutral wire connected to the switch and the Neutral bundle?

Double check your wiring against the manual.

Thanks Z-Waver I actually had my electrician installed them so I didn’t personally check the wiring, But I will double check with him again thsi friday to make sure…

I did check all the cables were connected, I just don’t know the source of the cabling I have to rely on him.
