I’ve got a ceiling fan running on a dimmer switch, but s you would expect, it has a lightbulb icon in the UI. Does anyone know if it is possible to clone and modify an existing device type (dimming switch) and modify it so if can use a different Icon (fan)? If it is possible, are there any instructions floating around that detail how to do it?
No it is not. Whether it’s a dimmer, on/off switch, or an appliance module they all show up as a light. There are other threads here about this also. Its a UI limitation. It would of been nice if they had a variable option for selecting the icon.

Thanks John, I added a +1 on that bug.
This was one of the reasons that I asked what I asked versus just changing the icon on a per-device basis. If you can clone the devce type and modify the XML or create a custom device type, it accomplishes the goal without changing the UI behavior. Maybe it’s possible to do something with the “Custom device types or names based on Z-Wave ID’s” section here: http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/ZWave_Debugging#Custom_device_types_or_names_based_on_Z-Wave_ID.27s
Just a few thoughts on potential workarounds…
FYI: By changing the device type, you may (most likely) break compatibility for 3rd party apps.

Thanks Garrtt. That’s a good reason not to do it.
Hopefully the DCR disucced in the post that John referrenced gets approved…
