I’ve been wondering about one thing, is dataMine graphing and logging plugin the only way to log data from Vera?
Since i’m always on remote access because my Vera is at my cottage and I have bad experience with this plugin
if anything should happen, and not be able to reset Vera or anything else… It would be great to have log on temp etc… So I wonder, is there any other way? Even thou I think I know the answer on that one :wink:

There’s always another way.

One possible way would be to log to a remote Syslog server at your home[sup](If you know how)[/sup] or online such as Papertrail[sup](Not an endorsement.)[/sup].

Use caution with hosted syslog servers as Vera’s logs can sometimes contain sensitive information including passwords.

I’m not quite sure how to solve the problem with remote syslog. Perhaps it is beyond my power.Do you have any experience with it?

Where as I’ve long used syslog servers for local and remote logging, I don’t use remote syslog-ing with Vera. I simply have no need.

Not rude at all. Though setting up a syslog server isn’t really anything to do with Vera and is therefore a bit out of the scope of this forum.

If you are going to implement syslog-ing, you first need a syslog server. You could use a Linux machine, which has syslog “built-in”. On Windows machines you could use something like the SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog server. Or you can use a online service such as Papertrail that I previously linked to.

The syslog server is where your log files will finally end up and be stored for you to view or search later.

After the syslog server is setup, you will then need to configure Vera to forward its logging to the newly setup syslog server. To do this you need to logon to Vera using SSH and then configure it to log to a remote syslog server.

Now, having said all that, what do you want to use remote logging for? I think you might be better served to use a USB stick and redirect your logs there.

Thank you, I can see things more clearly now.
The plan was to log different temperatures and mayby a motion sensor or two.
But what I’ve red on the links that you refer to I must say I got a bit skeptical :wink:

I don’t know if that is reversible.

If i store my log file on a USB, and I use two USB storage devices, then I can swap USB when I’m at the cottage and bring the one that has been logging Vera with home…?

I’ve never tried this, but see no reason why it would not work just fine.

If I remember correctly datAmine also had a post to log offsite via a mounted external drive. It might be worth you looking at this option as well.

Mayby I’ll just go for DataMine anyway, I think that is the easiest way. I could remote controll a pc running it with VNC or teamwiever if I want or need access to the log from home. I’ll give that a try next time I’m going up there.
My worst fear is that vera is going stuck and needs a reboot to function again.
I’m considering wiring up a time relay, controlled by a fibaro relay, that controls the power supply to Vera, and create a scene that puls every 24 hour, if Vera is not responding and dosn’t puls the relay then it means I can’t connect to Vera, then it cuts the power supply for 10 min.
I’ve wired a couple of relay on work and did some testing.
