invalid JSON when saving changes

After some time away from Vera, I logged in today to make some changes. I had turned off all of the automatic lights, etc. as they were turning on and staying on for days at a time, and this is at a remote location I access via FindVera.com.

Anyway, after making a couple of device setting changes, I hit save and get:
Version: 1.0.616
Checking internet connection …
Loading system database …
Loading timezones.json …
Loading local database …
Loading sysinfo …
timezones.json loaded
Local database returned invalid JSON.

Internet check status: ok
Sysinfo loaded
system database loaded

Hm. Thinking maybe it was a browser issue, I fired up Firefox made the changes, and same message: Local database returned invalid JSON.

Can reproduce at will across Safari and Firefox. If I click Control, it then loads properly. Any ideas here? [and folks, pls don’t tell me to power-cycle Vera].

I received the very same message this morning after making several minor changes to 3 scenes (involving temperature adjustments to the Wayne-Dalton thermostat, my only Z-Wave device):

After clicking SAVE, Vera responded:
Saving Local Data…
“Data saved, but received JSON is invalid.”

As per advice given elsewhere in the Forum, I simply unplugged Vera and then rebooted her. I was then able to make the desired change (in my case, one of the “Wattage” values for my WDTC-20 thermostat) and Vera retained the change. More importantly, when I clicked SAVE, Vera did not display the “JSON Invalid” error.

I had the same thing happen and I keep hitting refresh on the brower and it finally loads after a few times. It always seems to work the 3rd time. I have 2 vera’s with the exact same setup and one works fine and the other does this. It started happening when I upgraded to the 1.0.616 firmware. Both Vera’s have that on it though so I don’t understand why only one is and issue.

I should have explained that I, too, am using the .616 firmware with Vera. Frankly, I did not feel like refreshing my browser repeatedly, but your solution (for at least one of your Vera units) makes some sense.

Still, I rather resent when errors such as this crop up and there’s not a definitive “FIX” posted here in the Forum. Nor do I enjoy the prospect of having to “reboot” Vera under random conditions, when she’s intended for remote use! (Mine’s only been in use for less than 24 hours!!) :-\

I think we need an “Errors and Solutions” page added to the MCV Wiki. Will suggest same to their staff.

Thx, but Vera is installed at a remote location. Cannot unplug, power cycle, etc.

How about you submit a “Feature Request” for future firmwares:

“Include a ‘Reboot Vera’ option under ADVANCED tab.” ;D

After all, routers routinely have this feature, and it would help folks in your situation when troubleshooting.

I set up mine to do a auto reboot every night at 4am. Goto Advanced/Net and wi-fi/ Advanced configuration/System/File editor/etc/crontabs and then edit the root folder and add the code below and change the 4 to what ever time you want to change it to and it will reboot at that time. Remember it’s a 24 hour clock so 2pm would be 14. This has saved me when it stops working most of the time. Only once did it need to be unpluged to fix a problem. I believe you may need to reboot vera to make this take effect.

0 4 * * * /sbin/reboot #automatically reboots at 4 o’clock

Goto Advanced/Net and wi-fi/ Advanced configuration/System/File editor/etc/crontabs

When i do this I get as far as into the X-Wrt Administration Console. When I press System i get the error message:

HTTP 404 Not Found?? Anyone who knows why?

My Vera is remote.

My Vera’s “JSON Invalid” error returned yesterday, but this time - instead of rebooting Vera - I followed the advice above and simply refreshed my web browser several times … attempting the same minor change to a scene and clicking SAVE between each refresh … and on the 3rd try, the SAVE worked and Vera reported “Success”.

What a strange circumstance. At least I didn’t have to go crawling behind my entertainment center to unplug Vera this time!

elo, It’s just another annoying problem with Vera you will notice when you first go to the x-wrt console look in the url and copy all the info between https://ra1.findvera.com/ and cgi-bin it starts with host-. You have to paste it in on every page you go to after that point. It works fine locally but it’s just one more problem with this system that hopefully will be ironed out at some point.

I encountered the “JSON Invalid” error yet again after making a simple change to a Scene while logged into FindVera (ra1.findvera.com/control.php, etc.). Refreshing the web page several times and re-trying the SAVE command not only failed to remedy the “JSON Invalid” error, but also began producing the following error(s) with each screen refresh:

Internet Connection: FAILED
“You do not have an internet connection so you cannot see the helper videos which guide you through setup.”

So, I took your advice to heart, and logged into Vera locally, using her IP address on my home network … made the same change to the Scene … clicked SAVE … and voilà! Success.

I updated my browser’s shortcut to Vera, so that it now logs on to Vera locally, rather than via the FindVera.com site. I think that’ll help in the long run.

Thanx for the advice Reiserx

I keep geting the JSON error (FW 616) and it is impossible for me to develope my system without the save function. It is very irritating … Please MiCasaVerde make this an priority to fix so that we can use the system…

I must say that so far Vera has turned out to bee a dissapointment. I have truggeled for two full days to get my relatively simple tasks to work but can not get them to work… I am still optimistic that the MCV team will fix atleast this major functional issues within reasonable time…

Ole

Let’s hope because for me it’s an every day head ache. Nothing is simple. One of mine is down again so I have to wait till morning to see if the reset fixes it.

This issue has been fixed. It was happening only when you tried to save from findvera.com->control and it was related to a header requested by vera’s web server which didn’t passed through after an update.

You can reboot your Vera unit from Advanced->Tech Support

This is not fixed. I am still experiencing it with .616.

I decided to upgrade to .862, hoping some ongoing issues would be resolved (lights left on periodically, saving changes error, etc.)

Just finished upgrade to .862, made a change and got:
Communication error while retriving local database, retrying …
Communication error while retriving local database, retrying …
Communication error while retriving local database, retrying …

So, the message changed, but issue remains.

Note from MCV suggesting my router is the issue. Am dubious, but testing now. Will report.
