Integrating security system

For reasons I won’t go into, I was originally going to use my Vera for security without a dedicated alarm system. I’ve since changed my mind.

My goal is to be able to have a basic alarm system with 3 door contacts, 2 motions sensors, 2 key fobs for arming/disarming and be able to integrate it with Vera. I want to receive a text/email when alarm is tripped and don’t need/want any kind of monitoring.

I was looking at these items. Will this do it? Are there better options?

-DSC 1832 kit (keypad, panel, wired motion sensor, siren, battery backup).
-DSC WS4939 key fobs
-DSC EV-DW4975 - Vanishing Wireless Door Window Sensor
-EVL-3 envisalink

Can I use a wireless access point to connect the EVL-3 to my router? The 2 main stumbling blocks for me are connecting the panel to the keypad and the EVL-3 to my router with wiring.

That will certainly do it.

Your going to need an ethernet to WIFI adopter if you want to go wireless to your router.

I would get the EVL-3 working with the Virtual keypad first… the once that is OK move onto the vera plug in

Remember you can only have one connection to EVL-3 so exit the Virtual Keypad once yo know the Panel and EVL-3 & your wireless are good to go.

I would use Vera Alerts for my notifications also.

Thanks

Does anyone know if those keyfobs work directly with the DSC 1832?

There is a “EV-REC1 - Secure Wireless Universal Receiver Keyfob Kit”. I have no idea what that does. Does this panel require a receiver to use a wireless keyfob?

I guess I never considered it before, but there is an existing 15 year old alarm system. I don’t know if it works, but I assume the door contacts work. Can I use or at least try to use those hard-wired door sensors with the DSC 1832?

find out what kind of alarm system is there and you may be able to control it with your vera for under $100. If you have every window/door in your house already on that system, you will see how fast you will save money.

Open the panel, look for distinguishing marks and/or shoot a photo and post it. We should be able to identify it, and let you know if there is an available device to connect your vera to it.

You can use the existing sensors for sure… The only thing you may need to change (probably) is the end of line resistors. To match the resistors of the panel you replace it with… unless you can use the panel you have.

I ripped out and threw out the keypad. I replaced it with a camera/doorbell in my foyer. The panel is still there. Since it looked so old, I didn’t know if it worked and didn’t know how it was setup, I just dismissed using it.

I did look it up and try and find out the install code when I first moved in. I never did find it so I figured it was useless. The only thing I found was that I could completely reset it using all these jumper wires on the panel which seemed way to complicated for an outdated system.
