Indoor camera outdoors?

Anyone tried using an indoor camera outside if its under an awning? I plan on having a camera by the front door and wanted a foscam and for the price the indoors seem like a better deal.

High and low temperature extremes and high humidity extremes might be a problem … even if is protected from rain.

Low - Temperature – Mechanical Problems of moving parts
High Temp and High Humidity – Electrical Problems

I have one of the Foscam FI8918 cameras mounted outside my front door. It is under the awning and has functioned well for about a year. I got a couple during a sale and considered it ‘expendable’ since it was so cheap. I have been happy with it so far.

I’ve been using a Foscam 8909 as an outdoor camera for several months. I took the circuit board out of the plastic casing and weatherized them from humidity. As a previous poster mentioned, if commercial grade parts are used (as opposed to industrial) performance and reliability of the camera might get prematurely degraded. If you are Ok with that, go for it. I would avoid anything with moving parts (ptz) and opt for a fixed Camera.

I’m attaching a picture of my setup.

Good luck.

I’ve run a Foscam 8910 outdoors under the porch all last summer and winter. It’s now beginning summer number 2.

Flagstaff Arizona has COLD days in the winter, but I never had any problems. I did try to pan and zoom the camera once a day to try to keep it from freezing up.

It’s location keeps it dry.

What did you do to weatherize the board? Nailpolish on the PCB? Or did you weatherize the housing itself?

I’ve got 9 cams, mostly cisco/linksys and all but one of them is an outdoor cam. The key is avoiding direct rain, most of mine are mounted under the eves of the house facing out. Im in New England and we get down to -15f and I have not had an issue in over 6 years with these.

Go for it!

I have a wvc54g laying around. Are you streaming these to Vera or another server?

I’m going to be using it from my vera, main location will be under a portico by the front door to see who’s at the door.

A related question, if the camera is hardwirded with internet, how do you avoid the security risk of someone unplugging the ethernet and plugging into your network?

@fsa317: Set up a MAC filter?

I’ve never heard of anyone stealing internet access that way, but I’ve certainly seen people steal electricity with a long extension cord, so I suppose it is very possible…
