HSM100 Troubles

Hi, I’ve been trying to add several HSM100 3-in-1 sensors for several days, but cannot get any of them to trigger events. I have lights, and locks working well in my Vera configuration but this is driving me insane.

I’ve tried adding via the wizard and via the zwave button on the vera. Both methods add the device and eventually all four devices (sensor, motion, light, temp) all show up. In both cases the motion led appears to detect motion properly (for about 15minutes) - but setting up a standard scene where

Device: Motion Sensor
What type of event is the trigger?: A Sensor (door/window/motion/etc) is tripped
Name for this event.: KitchenMotion
Tripped? Yes

and the command is

Dimmable Light = On and Leave it

The “test” works fine, but Waving arms in the room, you can see the led trip on the motion sensor but the scene never triggers. I’ve tried this now with 3 different HSM100’s all with the same results.

Also, the settings under device options, current value are blank. The Sensor device also displays a “Failed at setting user configuration” error if I try to set any of the custom values like sensitivity etc.

And the third problem I’m seeing is that the led that indicates motion is detected seems to work fine for about 5 to 10 minutes. All waving or walking motion lights up the led, and then after a while the led stops lighting for motion. I can’t tell if it’s not detecting motion or if it’s in some kind of sleep or what. When I let it sit over night, it doesn’t light up for motion until I reset it (blue button).

I would say that it’s a bad sensor, but I’ve tried three all with the same results.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

In reading this, it sounds like the sensors are at-or-close to the edge of Vera’s reach (from a Radio standpoint). Try placing one of them close to Vera (< 10 ft) and leave it there for a while to have Vera pick it up properly, and register the ZWave “neighbor nodes”. You can force a reconfig when it’s closer to have it pickup the details sooner.

See if that corrects the problem.

My HSM100 is a little too far away from all my nodes (considering walls, barriers, etc), so it only sees one-neighbor (as shown in the Advanced tab of it’s config). As a result, I often don’t get notifications from it. It’s on my todo list to add a few Plugin Appliance modules to get better reception in that area.

Anyhow, give it a whirl and see if it works when it’s closer to Vera (after it’s had time to register it fully)

Thanks! Unfortunately I’ve been testing with the HSM100’s about 3ft from the vera the whole time… maybe too close? :slight_smile: but I’ll try moving it around, maybe getting it closer to some other devices. Right now the HSM100 I am testing see’s the vera and a light dimmer as neighbors.

Good news, HSM100 is working now. May have been “working” to some extent all along but didn’t realize. Some helpful tidbits, found in here, other posts and in the Express Controls manual http://www.expresscontrols.com/pdf/EZMotionOwnerManual.pdf which is much more helpful than the included homeseer manual. The keys to success were:

  1. The normal behavior for the sensor is that it doesn’t “listen” like other devices except for 10min during test mode (after button is pressed) otherwise the device is a broadcast only device. Therefore, you can -only- configure via UI4 etc during that 10min period otherwise you’ll get an error in UI4 and the sensor will not configure or accept your user settings
  2. The led lights only light up for motion during this 10min test mode. After 10min the lights do not light except once when motion is detected and the event is broadcast
  3. after motion is detected and broadcast, you won’t get add’l motion triggers broadcast until after the on-time value has completed (or the no-motion trigger is broadcast not 100% sure which)

Understanding these three points helped tremendously. I have other questions, and things to try, but this was a major hurdle to get over. I now have a motion-light and a no-motion-light-off scene and both are working properly.

Thanks for the help. -m

Thanks for posting the pdf link as this will help others with the same struggles you have experienced. I have been considering the three in one sensor, but haven’t bought one yet. Perhaps soon . . .

I am having the same trouble that was pointed out in the beginning of the thread, but do not see a definitive answer as to why your unit began to work (eventually).

I simple can’t get the HSM100 to recognize my user configuration (consistent with the user manual suggested settings) , and thus (I am assuming the thus), I cannot configure a scene correctly. Beginning to think this is a problem with the HSM100, but that might just be frustration talking.

How do I convince the HSM to take my user configured settings? I have been altering the variables to all extremes and still…no luck.

@billeaudca

I’m assuming that the HSM device device icon is present on the dashboard, but not the individual components (light, motion and temperature sensors), right ?

Are you doing item 1 as santakrooz proposes (i.e. press the blue button and putting it into test mode so that you can upload the new settings)? I’ll admit that that this was news to me and the pdf instructions are definitely much better than the Homeseer ones I received!

@huogas

Yes, those icons are present as well. The default configurations seems to be kosher with Vera (after I exclude, then include), but when I change them to the suggested user configurations for my situation, all goes bad.

@htweedie

Yes, I have followed those instructions so many times, I know them by heart now.

On a call with Daniel at MCV right now, and he is experiencing the same issues that I have had. I am beginning to suspect that I have a faulty device. Will post with resolution.

Still no solution.

Only thing left to do is to attempt another device, then send first one back if it is defective.

Just setup my new HSM100. Same issues as the first one.

This is driving me crazy.

I am concerned that the user configuration that I am using is simply not okay from Vera’s point of view, but I am following the HSM100 suggested user settings.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

Whoever helps me with this will win my eternal respect.

Update: I have reset to default settings and changed user configurations one by one. It seems as though I can adjust all settings except for the sensitivity. Could this be a Vera firmware problem? Help.

Thanks for the express controls link. the manual is great. I think Homeseer should have the link in their literature.

Anyways, problem I’m seeing is that somehow the light switch that I was trying to control with the HSM100 has 2 instances on my UI4 instead of one.

So I have a light dimmer that shows up twice in UI4, not only that it now has the default name _Dimmable Light as opposed to the one I had programmed before I connected the HSM100 to Vera.

Anyone else seen this issue?
I’m thinking that I should just remove the light switch and then reintroduce it to Vera, maybe the problem will go away.

thanks in advance

Seems like the duplicate Dimmer light issue was solved by removing the dimmer light and addig it back on to Vera… i guess i solved my own issue ;D
