I just wanted to stop Vera from beeing able to access the internet due to security concerns. So I activated the firewall in my router, to block any of vera’s requests to access the internet on its own. I have a VPN router in place, so I still can access my vera without using a MCV server on the internet.
It turns out, when I completely block veras activities, it crashes frequently. This morning it wasn’t even responsive any more and I had to reset by powercycling it.
This really concerns me, because I don’t want anybody except me being able to access my home from outside. Abviously setting Vera not to use it isn’t enough. If an internet block crashes Vera, I am really concerned what is going on here.
Perhaps anybody else had some experience with this and is able to help out.
Cheers
Unfortunatly you may be out of luck unless you know how to alter what Vera is trying to do they may have changed something.
What version of Vera are you using?
Vera is supposed to work without an internet connection so I’m told.
I am using the last official beta 979.
You are correct, vera tells me that it is unable to connect to the internet and that I would be not able to watch the videos.
Unfortunately from that moment on, the WLan went up and down frequently and this morning de vera was dead only blinking with its power LED.
I resetted it and it began working again. But at least I was not able to open the luup-files page any more - until I allowed internet access again.
I suspect that means, if MCV desides to switch off their servers, our homes become disfunctional as well. This is a severe security concern for me.
[quote=“umtauscher, post:4, topic:165504”]For the record, the page that cannot be opened is the install/uninstall plugins page, not the luup files page.
Vera keeps trying to contact the following servers:
The Weather plugin shouldn’t stop you from accessing the Luup Plugin’s page though. It definitely needs a Network connection for it’s runtime to work, since it phones Google for service (using regular HTTP calls), but those [tt]wget [/tt]calls have a timeout (5 seconds?)
From memory, Vera also phones out from time to time for the Clock, since it doesn’t have a battery-backed Clock circuit.
You may need to be selective in what you block outbound. If you have a copy of WireShark (or similar), and a SPAN port on your router then you can likely see all the relevant traffic in action (over time) and work out which is causing the headaches
Install/uninstall plugins is a remote plugins repository and is loaded from MCV servers, not locally. That way they can add new plugins w/o needing you to reflash the box.
As of ntp, it uses /etc/config/ntpclient config file and uses standard pool.ntp.org servers. Mine is currently connected to ntp1.Housing.Berkeley.EDU:123
