How to Factory Reset a Vera2

Hi All,

I apologise if this question has been answered elsewhere but I can’t find a detailed description on how to factory reset a Vera2. I keep reading that it’s necessary to click the ‘reset’ button quickly twice but this seems to be having no effect for me.

My unit has a recessed reset button next to the ETH1 port on the rear. It requires a pen or paperclip to click it. I have tried pressing it twice quickly then power-cycling immediately and also pressing it twice quickly then leaving for 30 seconds before power-cycling. Neither route has any effect.

The reason why I’m trying this is to attempt to get back to the initial starting position for a virgin unit that should have the Power, ETH1 and Z-Wave LEDs on. My unit has only the Power LED on and no others. When I connect power, for about 5 seconds I get the Power, ETH2, WiFi, USB1, USB2 and Service lights on but never ETH1 or Z-Wave.

I have never managed to successfully connect to this unit to set it up for the first time. I have spent so many weeks trying to get back to square 1 that I’ve even forgotten what the original problems were! I can’t understand how it can be so tricky to perform such a simple procedure as clearing out the settings and starting afresh.

It’s not possible to communicate with the unit in any way either by having it on my house network (with my router acting as the DHCP server) or standalone, connected directly to a laptop which has its NIC set to 192.168.81.10.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I think that I’ll just throw in the towel and return all the Z-Wave kit which I bought to the supplier under their 90 day return guarantee.

Many thanks.

When pressing the reset button twice very quickly, DO NOT power cycle it. You should see the lights eventually reset themselves.

Hi Garrett,

Thanks for the suggestion. How long is eventually?
I’ve tried this several times now. The longest that I’ve left it after an attempt is just over an hour. Nothing ever seems to change.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

So double tapping the reset button twice quickly does not force the led’s to change at any time? Have a look at this page:

If you have a computer running windows xp this should work. I could not get this to work under Windows 7

Hi Garrett,

Thanks again for your help.
You are correct that double-tapping the reset button has absolutely no effect on the LEDs either just after pressing, after waiting for a long time or on a power-cycle.

I have also tried to reflash the firmware but I only have PCs running Windows 7 and, like you, I can’t get it to work. I’ll try to find an old PC which is still running XP to give the reflash a go with that.

Thanks,

Just as a data point, I’ve also been able to run the flash tool from WinXP as a virtual machine (on a Mac).

Hi Da_JoJo,

I did try installing and running XP Mode within Virtual PC and this still doesn’t successfully reflash the unit.
Admittedly I do get a bit further, the Upgrade Utility runs without complaining about not finding a NIC, but when I click on ‘Browse’ the window which opens doesn’t list any devices at all.

I have set the static IP address of the NIC in Windows 7 to 192.168.81.2
In VPC XP Mode I have chosen the same NIC inside Tools->Settings
I have then set the VPC XP Mode NIC to use the static IP 192.168.81.3
The Vera2 is in update mode and is connected directly to the PC.

While the instructions on the http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/Firmware_Flash_Vera2 page state that the power LED should be blinking, I have read in this forum that it’s not the green power LED which flashes but an amber LED which is hidden beneath the green power LED. It is very faint and difficult to see as the power LED remains solidly on. Is this correct - this is what my Vera2 seems to do.

Have I missed anything?

Finally. does anyone know if the Vera2 should respond to a network ping when in update mode?
Mine doesn’t seem to.

Thanks,

  • Andy

That is correct. If you look at the power LED from above (i.e. in a plane almost parallel to the faceplate), the blinking will become obvious.

if you have any remarks or suggestions to make the wiki page easier for the techno-literate lemme know

Hi Da_JoJo

I’m not too sure what you’re suggesting I try now as I have tried all the options on the Firmware_Flash_Vera2 Wiki page.

As I’m trying to run this on a Win7 machine I followed the instructions for that OS:

  1. I tried enabling the TFTP Client and running the utility in XP SP3 compatibility mode. This did not work.
  2. I installed XP Mode and ran it inside Virtual PC (see my last post). This did not work either.

I have tried to detail the problems which I encountered with both methods in my postings above.
In method 1) my NIC did not appear so the utility failed immediately.
In method 2) the utility seemed to run OK but it could not find my Vera2

Does anyone know if the Vera2 should respond to a network ping when in update mode?
Mine doesn’t seem to.

I’m going to try running an old XP machine and run the update from there. If this doesn’t work then I’ll reconfigure my network to be on the subnet 192.168.81.XX and attempt to run the update from the MIOS splash screen.

Thanks all.
