Hostmann ThermoPlus AS2 RF setup

Hello,

I have the Horstmann thermostat that is z-wave compatible. It works fine as a stand-alone set but i’m wanting to add it to my vera now.

It seems that the relaybox (controlling the heater) is a z-wave device which should react on the thermostat mode.

But the thermostat it self is a controller. While playing around with the setup keys next to the Add mode (which is to pair the relaybox with the thermostat) I found a SUB mode as well as a NET mode.

I have tried adding the thermostat as a controller to vera and when i select the NET mode there is a reaction at least.

Would anyone from Vera be able to decode this or help me out in getting the devices on my network ?

Here’s the log output forn LuaUpnp.log while performing the adding of the 2nd controller:

bit later i added the relay box to the thermostat again and i noticed this in the logs:

02 03/20/10 18:48:22.868 ZWaveNode::UpdateCommandClasses node 1 empty – – <0xc04>

Also the termostat is showing a NO SIG (no signal warning), while the relay box is working so i suppose the NO SIG is for the connection with Vera.

Tj

The relay box is showing up as a thermostat in Vera, here are the details:

Could anybody talk an idiot through how to “pair” my Horstmann AF2 and Vera.
Horstmann have been no help whatsoever!

Thanks

Dave Hage

It appears that it is already paired. (Included)
Configured at 20-MAR-2010 20:23
Neighbors 1, (This should be Vera)

However, how it’s included and to what I cant tell. I’m noticing you have a secondary controller? would this be the tstat? If so, it may need to be included as a controller and not a device. I’m not 100% sure.

03 03/20/10 18:31:03.881 ZWJob_Initialize::JobDone version 2.48 type 1 role is 2 house id 62a81 node id 1 suc 1 IsSecondary 0 bOnOtherNetwork 0 NodeIdServerPresent 1 IsRealPrimary 1 IsSuc 1 <0xc04>

JOD.

I presume you are looking at my Vera remotely! As far as I’m aware I only have one (Vera) controller.
According the unhelpful reply I had from Horstmann, the receiver and Thermostat are in a “closed loop”, although the blurb specifically says it may be added to a Z-Wave network, which is I why I bought it!
I am a bit loath at this stage to start experimenting in case it stops working all together.
I just wondered if anyone had a step by step approach for getting to control or monitor the Thermostat via Vera.

Hope this makes sense.

Dave Hage

“I presume you are looking at my Vera remotely!”

No No…I just looked at the log you provided.

I see you posted this on: March 20, 2010, 10:41:40 am!! Wow. and still no resolution? I don’t know this device so cant really help you, maybe someone else will respond…

If I were you. I would send a tech support email from your Vera. As the subject state Guaranteed Compatibility
Then list your Tsat and relay info. At least that way you will be comforted to know if its not compatible it will be made compatible. If it is compatible maybe MCV will be able to help.

JOD.

@JOD they are different users that posted the info. The first posts including the log were from @tjardick, with the last one being in March; this post was from @dfhage today.

@strangely, thanks buddy, I was thinking there would be no way I would have waited that long to get something working.
@dfhage, sorry for the ID mistake of thinking you provided the log. The remainder of my post is still relevant.

“If I were you. I would send a tech support email from your Vera. As the subject state Guaranteed Compatibility
Then list your Tstat info. Atleast that way you will be comforted to know if its not compatible it will be made compatible. If it is compatible maybe MCV will be able to help” Unless someone else here can provide you info on the device.

JOD.

No worries, they are both names with a certain amount of randomness to them and they look similar. Easy mistake as I had to look twice also!

I’m still very interested with your results.

Please could you provide me with feedback of your tests.

I was going to give this another go now that I upgraded my Vera to ui4, but I currently have an issue that any save I perform gives a status code 500 error do need to get that fixed by support before trying again.

I’m more then happy to do any more tests to get this working now that I put my Vera back online.

Tjardick

Hi Guys,

Not sure who the replies are aimed at?
I bought a Horstmann AF2, because the product information claimed the Thermostat could be added to a Z-Wave network. When I received the device, it was fitted by a plumber who commissioned it and it works very well.
However, in the documentation, there are no instructions to pair it with any other device, other than it’s own receiver. When I questioned Horstmann about this, they said it was designed to be a “closed loop” system. This is at odds with their product information, so I think I have been misled by them.
I am no techie, but I was prepared to have a go, if anyone had any ideas how to “pair” it with Vera. It looked like to me that Tjardick had made some progress a few months ago, although I have to confess the log file doesn’t mean much to me!
So that’s were I am today, basically none the wiser!
Any ideas gratefully received.

Regards

Dave Hage

Hi,

What i found so far was that when the thermostat is in programming mode, next to the + button (ADD) to add the remote relais that triggers the heating, there are two other options:

  • Button (SUB): I think this is might be to add a sub controller (but so far i have had no confirmation)

round button (to go to temperature selection) shows quickly the word NET.

Both ADD and SUB modes seems to wait for a remote device to signal it self so i was hoping that the NET mode would add the device to Vera. But i didn’t get anywhere with this and could use some help from micasaverde on this.

As i currently have reinstalled my vera with ui4 and only added on appliance Node, i’m happy to perform any testing they require to get this working.

Regards,

Tjardick

tjardick,

My first comment was that looking through your log file you had another controller in the system and it’s a secondary controller, the fact it says House ID/ Node #1 would indicate it is Vera:
03 03/20/10 18:31:03.881 ZWJob_Initialize::JobDone version 2.48 type 1 role is 2 house id 62a81 node id 1 suc 1 IsSecondary 0 bOnOtherNetwork 0 NodeIdServerPresent 1 IsRealPrimary 1 IsSuc 1 <0xc04>

Then it states a primary controller: See excerpt from log:

06 03/20/10 18:31:03.897 Device_Variable::m_szValue_set device: 1 service: urn:micasaverde-com:serviceId:ZWaveNetwork1 variable: Role was: Suc SIS:YES PRI:YES now: Suc SIS:YES PRI:YES #hooks: 0 upnp: 1 v:(nil)/NONE duplicate:0 <0xc04>

I looked for the instructions for this device (Not much information available huh…) I did notice it’s made in Bristol, UK… My home town!!

Anyway, I’m not sure if the relay needs to be added to the thermostat 1st and then add the thermostat (controller) to Vera. Or. Add the thermostat as a controller and then add the relay. It’s my thinking at this point that possibly your thermostat is primary controller & Vera is secondary?? I’m not 100% sure….My advice would be to send MCV a tech support email from Vera. As the subject state Guaranteed Compatibility
Then list your Tstat info. It’s their policy to stop all development work and focus on adding new devices.

Dfhage,

Basically the thermostat is a Z-Wave controller and you are adding the relay to the controller as a device. Vera would then control the thermostat directly and the relay indirectly via the thermostat. So, due to Mi Casa Verde’s policy, it will be made compatible with Vera (if it’s not already) It’s my GUESS at this point that if you already have the thermostat paired with the relay that the thermostat gets added to Vera as a secondary controller. How you tell the thermostat to pair I have no idea. Sorry guys…

JOD.

How you tell the thermostat to pair I have no idea.

That would seem to be the $64,000 dollar question?

I had this reply below, from Horstmann today, if anyone is interested, doesn’t really help, but at least they replied. I implied to them, that their literature was misleading, and this was their response.
Anyway, does Vera support the Thermostat Command Class?

The AS2-RF is Z-Wave certified which is why the logo is used, in fact we are required to use it with Z-Wave certified products, also we are trying to promote interest in this relatively new technology.

There are two parts to this system, the transmitter (AS2) and receiver (ASR). This system will sign on to a Z wave network and then repeat messages, effectively acting as a router. A controller which uses the Thermostat Command Class could technically control the ASR. However the controller would need to support the hourly communications and status check otherwise the ASR will enter fail safe mode. Also without using the AS2RF there would be no time or temperature measurements.
We therefore recommend only the AS2 is used to control the ASR directly as there could be a potential conflict between the AS2 and the third party controller over riding each other.

The Thermoplus system complies with minimum Z-wave certification requirements. No literature or advertising relates to the Thermoplus system offering “Remote” control of the heating. It does highlight that the AS2-RF system can be combined with existing Z-Wave systems which in this case will benefit from the additional message routing provided by the ASR unit.

Going forwards we are keen to provide additional functionality for remotely controlling the heating via external systems.

We are implementing this functionality in our new range of thermostats using the relevant Command Classes specified by Z-Wave.

We will be happy to let you know when this functionality is available and Z-Wave certified, and hope the above has clarified any confusion.

@JOD, Small world! I was born in Filton!

@strangely, Respect brother! My uncle was Fire Chief at Filton airport for like 20+yrs…Small world indeed.
My personal email is on my profile if you want to shoot me yours.

I have fitted Veras in our vacation properties in Florida and they work very well, including controlling the thermostats and I would really like to move to having a Vera installed at home in the Isle of Man, but a major part of that (for me at least) is getting a working Thermostat. To be honest controlling the thermostat is one of the most useful features of all (in my opinion).

Given that there are no european thermostats I wondered if it is possible to recreate it using a few parts. I don’t really know anything about thermostats but isn’t a European thermostat just a clock with a couple of relays attached? If we are using a Vera we don’t need the clock and surely there must be relays available as z-Wave modules? If we want a more sophisticated thermostat then we can throw in a z-Wave temperature sensor.

Any thoughts?

If my theory that a thermostat is just a relay holds any water then it strikes me that we could build our own thermostats using two regular z-Wave light switches, one for switching on the central heating and one for switching on the water heating. It would also leave us with an easy way to override the current setting.
