I’m trying to decide between the Honeywell vs. Trane. I intend to run it using local schedule and use Vera to override and monitor temp when needed. Not ready to set up scenes for now, and I like the reliability of a local program.
From my readings, I will need to enable scheduling on both thermostats to allow for local scheduling. Clearly, I can configure the schedule at the thermostat, but I figure it would be easier to program through Vera’s GUI if possible.
It appears that I cannot do that with the Trane, but can I do that with the Honeywell thermostat? Again, I just want to be able to configure the thermostat’s local schedule via Vera’s GUI. Please let me know if that is possible.
Also, if you have opinions on Trane vs. Honeywell, I’m all ears.
Any info? I would simply like to know if it is possible to set the Honeywell’s “local” program through Vera, so I don’t have to stand at the panel to do the input. Thanks!
I don’t know which Honeywell product you are aiming at, but I have an Honeywell thermostat which is connected to the Web via wifi and I can program and do everything from the honeywell site (which is free, by the way). So I don’t need it to be connected to the vera system. I guess It would be fun to have the thermostat to react to some sort of scene in the zwave chain, but for now, I can’t really find any application for that matter. Hope it helps.
Note: I don’t have the product number and spec here, but I can find it for you. The setup also come with an external thermometer and a remote control. There is an app for iOS… I don’t know for android. The display of the thermostat is also great and give you the forecast weather as well.
For that matter… I would LOVE to be able to use my Honeywell display as an interface for my vera system…
It is not a WiFi, but a ZWave addressable device. I am just looking for the reliability of a locally set schedule (in case Vera is offline or disconnected) with the convenience of programming from Vera. Since I read that I cannot do that with the Trane unit, I am hoping to find out if I can do it with Honeywell.
I have a Trane … I set my schedule once and I am done. I do not think I have ever touched it since than (> 1YR). I do use the Thermostat for usage reports and check if it’s time to clean the filters …
What Vera does is to toggle between the schedule program and the “unoccupied” set points. It can set these set points from Vera! It can also override the current set points for the day … but it’s temporary … which is what I wanted anyway.
The schedule does normal “Occupied” day/night temps for weekday/weekends.
When I am gone it goes to energy savings mode. If I am gone for long periods of time I will remotely tell my phone I am coming home so it is ready when I get there.
Thanks Richard. I presume your initial setting was in front of the thermostat? I want to the convenience of setting schedule via Vera because I want to be able to tweak the schedule times and temperatures. I may want to move the time by 30 minutes or the set point by one or two degrees. It would be great if I can do that from Vera. I was hoping that the Honeywell unit would allow for that.
Can’t do the “Schedule” remotely … but I can do all the daily overrides and toggle between schedule/occupied … That’s all I do, or would need to do, on a regular basis.
For me I worry more about internet connected thermostats.
Someone hacking into Nest servers could set every customers house thermostat to 95!
Last week Nest access was down for a period of time. I am not sure I want my home automation Running in the cloud. Accessing it from the cloud has enough security concerns for me.

I have those same concerns. I don’t expose any of my devices to the Internet. I VPN into my home network and connect that way. The security features on my cameras, and perhaps Vera are weak, so VPN is the best solution for me.
I am always concerned about using a 3rd-party to host/forward control to my home device because I have no idea how seriously they take data security.
But things like Vera and Nest initiate connections from you LAN out to the internet … making them potential sources for intrusion.
Most people do not setup their router to check connections initiated from the LAN with a destination on the internet … yet these tunnels might allow attacks.
Considering the fact that you had to cross post to try and get someone to answer your topic is not very polite. To answer your question, there is no way of having Vera control the local schedule of any thermostat. You can only override the settings of the thermostat or have Vera have control of the scheduling.

Thanks Garrett. So there currently exists no Z-Wave enabled thermostat that would allow me to set or tweak the local program/schedule via Vera?
[quote=“garrettwp, post:12, topic:173901”]Correct there is no thermostat that allows for control of the local scheduling.

Cheers. Thanks again for that info.
I have been reading reviews and threads between the Trane and Honeywell. Aside from the undesirable low set point for heat, the Trane unit seems more popular/reliable. Is that accurate?
I have had two Tranes(one in a vacation home) for almost two years with Vera 2. I have scenes with timers to control the temperature. (Early Morning Raise Heat, Lower Heat)
I just upgraded to an Iphone 4S this week and can change/override setting on my Trane using Vera from my I Phone
I don’t use local schedules and just use the scenes
The Trane local schedule is available through Z-Wave I believe, but possibly read-only. (I haven’t tried to manipulate it, nor do I know if it can be done through the Schlage/Nexia bridge, for instance.)
