Honeywell TH8320ZW1007 deviates from set program

Hi, all.

I’m brand new to Vera2 and home automation in general, so please forgive me in advance if this is an obvious one… However, I’m stumped.

I’ve recently installed this thermostat and paired to a Vera2. All worked well for a few days, manually setting the temperature from the thermostat or remotely. But then I decided to program the unit with wake/leave/return/sleep heating values, as follows:

5AM - 69 F
8AM - 66 F
5PM - 69 F
10 PM - 60F

The problem is that in the middle of the night, around 3-4 AM, I’m awakened because the temperature is getting quite warm. When I check the thermostat, I see it set to 69. It still shows it’s set to follow the program, but it clearly is not, as at 3-4 AM the thermostat should be set to 60.

I dug through the manuals a bit and the only thing I found was the “heat energy saving setpoint,” which by default is set to 63. I didn’t know what that was so I emailed Honeywell support and got the following back from them:

Heat/Cool Energy Saving Set points are the ones that would be used when using the Z- wave controller or any auxiliary device/sensor to force the thermostat into ‘Away’ mode.

The only reason I bring that up is that at night, the temperature probably does get down to 63, and I’m wondering if that’s triggering some kind of change to the settings. But that’s not what I understand the “setpoint” should do.

So - any thoughts on this one? Am I missing something totally obvious?

Many thanks!

By default, the thermostat has a recovery mode which tries to estimate how long before the time period it needs to start heating in order to reach the preset temperature at the time you programmed. You can turn that off by going to the settings and turning “Adaptive Intelligent Recover” off (setting # 530).

The energy saver setpoints are defaults put in by the manufacturer for you to take advantage of their low energy mode. As they explained in their e-mail if you place the thermostat into “Away” or “Energy Saver” modes these setpoints are used for the heating/cooling temperatures, overriding your programmed temperatures. The idea is that if you go away you can just put the thermostat into energy saver (or “Away”) mode and it will stay at that temperature, not go up and down with your programming. You can change these presets in the installer menu.

In your case, since you didn’t put the thermostat into “Away” or “Energy Saver” mode that should not be your problem. I agree with ZMaF, I think you are just seeing the thermostat in “Recovery” mode trying to get your house to the 5 AM temperature by 5 AM.
