A buddy who used to install alarms said I could simply change out my existing Ademco/ Honeywell touch panel and replace wit the 6280 on my monitored ADT system and all would be rosy. Well,tomorrow is the big day and I am nervous. He says the panels are pretty dumb and this one will work as well as the existing, but ADT seems to do a heckuvalotta programming when they change something on the system (and it usually involves them calling into the central office).
I am not sure if either is an option for an ADT monitored system,but crossing fingers. PLEASE tell me if this is a waste of my time before I waste a lot of effort tomorrow.
What are you trying to achieve by changing the keypad?
If you just want to interface the system board/alarm panel, then you may already have an alarm panel that either already has RS232 to interface with the the RS232 plugin, or if not then adding and using the ad2usb plugin would also work.
Thanks for the reply. I am inclined to try one of those, since I really don’t need the bells and whistles of the TUX (or the cost). Seems odd that simply sending a voltage or pulse (not sure which) to the alarm panel would arm/ disarm it. Why wouldn’t the bad guys just spoof alarms?
I am in the same boat. don’t you need the same installer codes for the ad2usb? i still think you need the installed code and you will have to program it in on your panel.
The TUX is a Zwave controller and Keypad… (Don’t bother making it a secondary with Vera… tried and no dice)
It will not connect Vera and your panel!!
you need an ad2usb to do what you want… but you need installer code… since you need to add another Keypad because that is what the ad2usb is… another keypad.
I have a Vera3 an ad2usb and a TUX… the TUX is just pretty and does nothing in my home automation setup, I only have it because I was testing … I’m a security installer.
Thanks Jim, ADT will probably not give me their double-secret-handshake installer password to add another keypad myself. They told me on the phone that they would not monitor systems installed by others. Let’s say I DO manage to get this installed, will they have a way to see I’ve added another keypad? Do you know of a list of possible ADT codes I could try? Thanks again!
No, I don’t have any install codes. When you take over an alarm Panel you basically replace the board in the basement and use the contacts etc that run to it. This… in my opinion is the best way if you are going to make this part of your home automation system … own it all.
Thanks, but I like monitoring. There have been times when I have been out of the loop and ADT dispatched the police. Feels comfortable. Got a great USAA deal on the ADT monitoring 11 years ago and it’s never gone up.
You can install your own Panel and go anyplace for monitoring… But this time you have the install code and can use all your sensors to control your Z wave 8)
I’m signed up with the eyez-on monitoring service through their IP module connected to my DSC system. They have just launched the service for Honeywell panels also, so you are in luck; its got a ton of other usefulness including standalone (no fee) alerting, monitoring and remote arming etc:
I know the developer has also contacted MCV, to implement the same third party interface that was developed for the DSC panels, so you are also covered for automation purposes also!
If you don’t want to risk going purely IP based monitoring, then there are other options like alarmrelay.com that are also about $9 a month!
