Help Selecting Security System (Physical)

I currently have a hardwired system (2001 era), but all of the sensors are properly installed in the doors and windows and work properly, so I’d like to utilize rather than replacing with all wireless units. I need help selecting a system - it looks like DSC, need help selecting a model and knowing what to purchase to make it integrate with Vera3 (which is set up and working):

Window Sensors: 4
Door Sensors: 3
(would like the ability to add wireless sensors in the future)

Desired Application:

  • Be able to arm/disarm via Kwikset keypads
  • Be able to see alarm system status via Vera (iVera on iOS)
  • Be able to arm/disarm system via Vera (or iVera on iOS)
  • Alarm trip causing text messages from Vera

No plan to have active monitoring - we are in a safe neighborhood and I’ve got a gun, so I’d just like the system to alert me if someone entered while I was home (via siren) or away (via text).

Any advise is much appreciated!

You can get a DSC PowerSeries 1832 kit from Homesecuritystore dot com that will allow you to use wireless sensors. You will also need to pick up a it100 and a serial to usb adapter (if vera will be close to the alarm panel), or you can use a wiznet serial to ethernet adapter. What you are asking in function is all possible. What type of wiring do you have from your current security system? You may be able to use the existing wiring.

In looking closer at my existing system, it is a DSC Power832, so I’m assuming I’ll be able to reuse the existing sensors and wiring? They are just 2 wires for each sensor (white wire). It does look like each line has a resistor wired inline on one line of the pair. Will get pics later if that would help.

The power 832 should be compatible with the IT100 already! If its still working then why replace it as it should work with the plugin fine!

Wonderful… the Vera will exist in the same closet as that unit, so all I’ve got to do is order the IT100 and Serial to USB adaptor. Any recommendations on the Serial adaptor?

Thanks!
