I have a brand new vera system and am trying to connect my first device. The device is a Hawking HRDS1 door/window sensor. I am unable to get the dongle to recognize it. I would greatly appreciate a step by step from someone who has paired this sensor or the SM103.
I have a Hawking HRDS1 door/window sensor. Since this is a battery-operated device, it should be the last device installed. I am not sure why, but it may have to do with the fact that it can’t transmit, only receive. I remember that I had a very difficult time getting it to install. I think that I just kept trying to install it – over and over – until it finally installed. Make sure that it is near the Vera. Z-wave is touted to have a range of up to 100 feet. My experience, however, is that about 50 feet is as far as you want anyone device from the nearest one.
Hi,
You must pair it in the first 10 sec after putting the batteries into it. Before you put the batteries, put the dongle in include mode (one press on the button), after that, put the batteries in and press the button on the sensor to be paired with Vera. Try to keep the dongle and the sensor close to each-other. You should see the dongle flashing rapidly when it includes the sensor. After that, you can plug it back into Vera and assign it to a room.
Reinstalling the battery and pairing right away worked. Thanks a million! Hope someone else is able to read this when they are having trouble.
great information, mcvovidiu. I plan on adding another door / window sensor. it will be a lot easier with this information. It would be great if so I would include this in the Wiki. are other battery-powered devices like this? If they were listed devices, then people could search the archives and/or wiki.
The statement was made that this device should be added last because it is battery operated . I started this venture for this specific device but will likely add more. Will I have additional problems when I go to add more? My only snag is that it sends two messages for every event. While this is something that i can live with, anythoghts on why?
I doesn’t need to be paired last, because it’s battery operated. I don’t know where this info comes from, but it’s not correct - I paired many more devices after HRDS1.
And it has a small button on the back, which triggers including/programming mode. I normally just take the sensor off and while trying to pair it, keep pressing and releasing that button, until it successfully pairs - works within few seconds for me.
I’d guess that if you pair the battery devices last you would get more routes to the controller which might make it more relaible?
I’d suppose (and might be wrong) that if you add it first and then add more ac powered devices between the battery device and the vera if when you add the new devices if the battery device is “asleep” it wont be able to tell the new AC devices “hey I’m here can I route through you?”.
But if you add the AC devices first and then you add the battery device- wouldn’t it ask all the ac devices around it at that time “hey I’m here can I router through you?”

True, but you can always wake it up and reconfigure it later if you have added new nodes.
sure- and if you add new things later that’s what you would need to do. (I think repair network ran over night actually would fix it?).
But if you have 3 devices in your hand and plan to add them all in the next 15 minutes, it’s probably best to add the battery device last.
In reference to not being able to add the HRDS1 to Vera.
More than likely the device has already been paired at the factory. 1st, Set Vera’s dongle to remove a node.Press the connect lever on the back of the HRDS1 to remove any pairing. Now set the dongle to include a node and press the connect lever on the back of the HRDS1. You should now see a new device within Vera.
JOD.
Pressing the back button repeatedly is the best way to include it once you set vera to include mode.
;D
For pairing with Vera, one has to press the program button in rapid succession 3 times. Works for me all the time.
Hello everyone… This must sound like a weird one, but I have a 90gal reef tank that is in my theater room. I have a 10x9 room that I custom built in my walkout basement that houses all my equipment & having the ability to work on my system.
I have Z-Wave switches that are connected to my lighting, main pump, ATO (auto top-off system) & my 29gal frag tank as well. I need a switch that I can connect a float switch that I can config in Vera to turn off my ATO & main pumps if there is a problem.
I read that the HRDS1 has terminal screws that I can connect a sensor (float switch), but I can not locate a pic of it to see if this is true. Can someone please tell me or if there is something else that may suit mu needs.
Thank you…
John
No need for a picture, I can confirm it has the external connector! I have two, and being used with external switches.
@computerjohn: Very good idea. Excellent use for the HDRS1. If used in that application, I would also suggest you power the switch externally, so you don’t have to concern yourself with dead batteries.
Thank you so much!! Another quick question, is that I’m a dealer for Vera. Any good location to purchase this sensor??
That’s a great idea. Thank you… I was already thinking of incasing it to protect it from the salt in the air. I’ll incorporate a weather proof plug… I’ll let everyone know how I make out & post from pics…
Great, thanks for the link… Just what I wanted…
