Getting started with Insteon

hello ! Fba,

I have a vera3 … what I need to install a insteon device ? vera3 comes with insteon compatibility ?

or I need to buy something ?

thanks !!!

Hi Piwtorak,

In order to use Insteon with the Vera, you will need to purchase a power-line modem (PLM). Something like the 2413U should do the job nicely. http://www.smarthome.com/2413U/PowerLinc-Modem-INSTEON-USB-Interface-Dual-Band/p.aspx

From there, you can use the Insteon support built in to the Vera, but it is very basic. Altsteon is an alternative that provides a fair bit more functionality, but at the cost of a significantly more difficult setup.

Hello Fba, thanks for help me…

altsteon is a software to install in vera3 ??? where can I buy ??? (put a link please if you can).

I like the power link modem…I put that in a outlet and link to vera3 via USB cable ??? vera3 will recognize ???

after I add the devices in vera3 or in powerlink modem ???

have powerlink modem a web interface ???

sorry take your time…

thanks !!!

Altsteon is a piece of software that fba wrote to overcome the short comings of Vera’s basic insteon support. If you looked in the insteon sub-forum further down you would see the following thread:

The install is not something for beginners and requires some command line knowledge and some time to setup.

For the power line modem (plm). You will need to buy the correct one for your country. Buying the usb version would be the easiest and would require to be close to the vera unit as the usb cable can only be around 10Ft (3 meters) long (per recommendation of SmartHome). Vera should have no problems seeing the plm when plugged in. I strongly suggest that you do some searching online on how insteon works and how to get started.
