I am currently using Schlage keypad deadbolts with Nexia. Everything was beautiful until mom moved in. She is older and cannot remember codes. So she writes them on pieces of paper and leaves them everywhere (including outside) for or all to see. I might as well leave my doors unlocked.
Now to my question. Could I instead upgrade to a micasaverde system and give her a key fob to unlock the door with? That way we could continue to use the codes while she uses the fob(s). I intend to buy a dozen and deactivate them as she loses them.
Can anyone tell following? Will this work in general? Which fob would be easy for her to operate? Can I activate multiple fobs and then deactivate them when lost?
Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Joe
You could do all of that… But the problem I am having with my Aeon Labs / Aeotec Key fob is that when I leave to go to work and come home, sometimes my fob is asleep and will not turn back on nor connect to the vera. I think it sometimes takes a while for the vera to realize you are back at home and actually “see” the key fob. Not sure if this is fixable or not. If it is, then I’d say that’s a perfect system for your situation.
Interesting. Does that mean that most fobs, or all zwave devices, are constantly active? Can anyone suggest a fob that does not have this problem?
Hmm not sure. I would think that the keyfob could go to sleep and just require a button press to wake up and send out the signal to the Vera. I am thinking mine is malfunctioning. Makes no logical senses for a keyfob, which will obviously go with you and your keys away from the home, to disable itself and be 100% useless when coming home.
I use Z-Wave.Me key-fobs. I take them out of the house with no problems. I use them as four-button scene controllers. The top two buttons are larger than the others - good for Moms. ;D
They are a little tricky to set up because they only wake-up for short periods when the special button combination is used during configuration. Once you get used to repeating the button sequence and clicking the Configure node now button, it works OK.
If you come home, walk straight up to Vera and then press a button on the keyfob, does it work?
I see several controllers available including the vera2, vera3 and a “lite” version for sale. Will any of these work with these fobs? Any suggestions on one vs the other for my app?
Thanks!
Joe, Vera 3 or the Vera Lite.
oTi@, not when it goes to sleep or whatever. I literally have to remove the battery and put it back in, or wait a really long time for it to start back up again. Sometimes it never does. And now today, it has completely reverted back to not working whatsoever with scenes. Just doesn’t send the signal or something even though the green light comes on.
@Outcomer,
Just confirming that you see that behavior with your Aeotec fob without making any changes to (scenes on) Vera?
