Completely new user here. I did a little remodeling over the summer and wanted to do some lighting automation, so after reading around a lot I installed a handful (6) Leviton RF+ dimmers, a couple of the Monster IWS1000 switches which were cheap at the time, and a 4-button zone controller VRCZ4-M0Z. Then decided to wait for Vera Lite before going further. Well, that missing piece of the puzzle arrived yesterday…
First evening saw a mixture of success and frustration. I updated it to current firmware, then associated it with the first couple of devices - all good. Then associated it with a handful more… a certain set of dimmers would simply not configure. Tried starting over a few times - REALLY starting over, that is: resetting the Zwave network, resetting to factory defaults, factory resetting each device. It wasn’t completely consistent but each time a few devices would not configure, even though they were always reachable on the network (testing with “stress test”). Once they were in this state it seemed that no attempt to disassociate/re-associate them would have any effect. Maybe I should have tried a “network heal”, but… I might be misunderstanding how things work, but as the device “pings” worked ok it didn’t seem like that would help.
Finally made one more attempt this morning, starting with another complete reset, and this time religiously only associated one single device per trip, returning Vera to base to configure and save between each one. Much more luck this time. One single device failed to configure, but it seemed like it wasn’t really reachable. Eventually adding another device must have filled in coverage and they all became active.
Managed when tinkering last night to configure a single scene with trigger (turning off basement light also switches off laundry room light). That was pretty straightforward to set up, which was encouraging. I nuked the config this morning, but seems like it should be easy to reproduce it!
That’s about it so far. A couple of questions.
is it really necessary to be so cautious in associating very few devices at once? During my many attempts at this, it seemed like I could do two at one fairly reliably, but if I tried three I’d have problems. Though of course it may depend which specific devices they are, how close they are to the base vera location for signal coverage, etc…
I’ve totally failed to assign any devices to rooms. I can set the rooms and save, but after a reboot everything is back in “no room” again.
It is best to add one at a time. Get more reliable inclusions that way. If you have trouble adding a device, try to exclude it first.
What browser are you using. If it is IE, try another browser. Like chrome or Firefox. IE is known to have issues.
Thanks, I will certainly be including devices one at a time from now on…!
I was using firefox as the browser (what’s the current version this week, 194 or so? :-). Everything with the rooms looked as if it were working - I can assign everything to a room, save the config, and all the devices are indeed in the correct rooms wherever I look in UI (dashboard or devices). It’s just after a reboot that they go back to “no room”.
Maybe it’s just a remaining glitch in early UI5… not a showstopper.
Another ‘First Day’ post - The video made it look all so easy… and then real world issues kick in.
First thing it did was update firmware - OK. Settings around Time dont seem to remain, although Time Zone does, it fails to sync with any time source and keeps drifting.
Noted the KWH settings are $ or Euro, no £ but I can live with that if the time would stop drifting. All devices associated and working - now for Scenes…
Ticket logged with support around inability to set schedules (nothing but first option)
Getting it set up on anything other than a standard 192.168.x.x and has not proven easy - trying to access device directly throws up challenge/response dialogue and only way to get onto box is to use web access, which has been a pain - assumption is that mios account logon is the same as when hitting the box directly? If not, does anyone know the admin/back door?
The box has potential but had I not been IT savvy, lesser customers would have found it’s size very useful for throwing out the window!
Not seen U14 (new customer), Is it any more stable than U15?
OK - so a good trawl around the board came up with some good advice;
IE aint the browser of choice (not without some tweaking) - moved over to FireFox and local login (direct to IP) now accepts challenge/response…
Schedule problem - was more of a ‘Can’t set/config when using mios.com access, must use local logon’ (see point 1)
Much happier now that I can configure all my toys properly and the missus doesnt quite think I’ve wasted my money!
I may have missed something in the FAQ’s - but will persevere!
BTW - Loving the captcha maths - letters are the most tricky I’ve seen (i.e. even as a sighted person easier to get them ‘read’ out)
The most p[opular browser on the market is also the one that least adheres to the Web standards. Strange but true. As far as Safari goes, not much experience there but that is definitely not a popular browser. Confused yet??!! As far as the letters in the box, don’t worry, just do the audible option. And, after a few posts you don’t even have to do those letters at all!
I recommend running heals periodically as a rule of thumb. I find that it helps to ensure that the network tables are up to snuff. I’ve found that, when devices are being finicky, a heal often does the trick.
Depending on how you have your unit configured. Heals usually get run around 2am.

Interesting - so that happens by default unless somehow disabled deliberately?
As far as the “devices returning to no room” issue goes, I rebooted my veralite yesterday to move it, and they all stayed in their assigned rooms. Can’t say what, if anything, changed, but the problem did go away!
This board has historically had a lot of problems from the spammers, so there are a few mechanisms that have been put in place to lower the noise-rate from them, along with the 1000’s of fake accounts…
A number of these restrictions disappear after you post a little.
letters are the most tricky I've seen (i.e. even as a sighted person easier to get them 'read' out)
I've just lowered this for newbie postings to make it a little easier. It can be raised again if the abuse levels go up, but hopefully the new setting will be less annoying for folks.
