Okay, maybe gag is not the best term… was on findvera earlier all was well… went back about 11AM Eastern
and got this… is it just me? I know when I see errors for file opens that are read write open requests and they
fail cause a file system is mounted read only, its usually out of space, or something bad has happened to the
filesystem and its been put in read only mode by the OS.

Yeah, someone needs to spend an extra $10 a month on their hosted solution so they get health check alerts…
you know, the simple ones… out of space, disk errors, cpu usage… etc… the kind they would take me out back
and shoot me for if someone wasnt watching for them (if this happened where I work).
I am sure we could even donate some nice shell scripts to do the job :o
there are 3 different servers: findvera.com, ra1.findvera (for Vera1 users) and ra2.findvera (for Vera2 users). There seems to be an HDD error on findvera.
We’ve changed the server structure for UI4, which is going into beta on Monday and hopefully will be ready to general release in 4 weeks. There will be a main and a backup server for everything with redundant failover so this shouldn’t happen again.
I’m trying to reach our IT manage but it’s Sunday and mother’s day, and I can’t reach him yet.
spend an extra $10 a month on their hosted solution so they get health check alerts
I’m not sure I understand the suggestion. We do get health check alerts, and this morning an alert came in. But how would the health check alerts predict or prevent an HDD fault?
Okay… not being smart… but any of the servers that I run that need to be up are usually raid 5 with at least one hot spare in place. That way I can have a drive fail, the controller will continue to run fine in a degraded mode, it will pull the hot spare in and rebuild the array. It can probably run like that all weekend because it rebuilt itself and just doesn’t have a spare. When someone gets in they pull the dead drive, put in a new one and it becomes the hot spare. Yes I realize this costs more. But if the web site isn’t working, it can put people off using a product. You have one helluva product and I want to see it continue to be successful.
Being that I use this for business and people in one of my condos were paying for a late checkout and now they are locked out because I couldn’t extend the door lock code and they had left their phone in the unit. Real nice system guys. I can’t believe it didn’t have a redundant hdd raid setup already. Even my home computer has a more reliable setup. Do like Les F said and make it “reliable”. This is completely unacceptable.
What buzzwords can I think… hmm… perhaps redundancy, cluster, failover
On the other side I would never make tenants 100% dependent on something that requires internet connection and power… c’mon… I’m not even mentioning non-SLA service
Yeah… have to agree… my cabin rental is ‘nice to have vera in’ but not dependent upon it. I too worry more about DSL being up out on a mountain (hell I am happy they have DSL out there, wasnt long ago best you could get was 33.6 dialup.
I even go so far as to have a pushbutton lockbox with the schlage emergency keys in it should the batteries die in the schlage deadbolt. They can at least call me for that combo to get a set of keys. I do love the ability to change the codes on the deadbolt, or make sure they didn’t leave the place with the A/C or Heat cranked to an extreme. Yeah the cleaners will catch it, but its the money that it can save me.
On the other hand, those that do buy vera for household use take a lot of what I plan for for granted and ‘Just expect it to work and be there on the net’ IMHO those are the masses that you need to try to keep happy as thats probably the majority of the market.
Maybe you guy missed a big point of what I said in my post. They left their phone in the unit and didn’t even have a way to call me. I have back up in place but not if they can’t reach me. They had to start knocking on neighbors doors to barrow a phone. The bigger point here is the website should “just work” as well as Vera.
Its amazing what I don’t see sometimes. Yeah, thats a real pain if they lock their phone in the place. I wasn’t really knocking your use or expectations, was more going on about the fact that while I love the whole theory of automation, I don’t like relying on it and tend to TRY plan around it. However you have a great point, if they lock their phone in the rental and then things go south on the automation front, you do have a problem. Now you got me thinking too much… Do I need to install a ringdown phone at the cabin… one you pick up and it autodials back to me? Naaaa thats overkill, unless its 10 degrees out and you are a renter that’s stuck outside…
I’ll give you an example. Have you guys noticed that small commercial router can easily cost 4-8 times more then consumer device of pretty much the same capabilities? Not without a reason. So if you decide to save money and use consumer device for business purposes you do take the risk, and if something happens you can only blame yourself.
Unfortunately we all overly rely on technology a lot now days. It hard to get around it. I would be out of business if the internet didn’t work for my vacation rental business. The people also had their car keys in the condo also so they were completely SOL. It’s a good thing a lot of people know me that live there full time. Anyway the site is up and running again so I’m all smiley and tingly inside.
We’re sorry for that problem, it was solved the moment our Network Engineer took his free Sunday and fix it, even it wasn’t from our end. Like we said above, the new UI4 structure will have redundant servers and this kind of problems won’t happen.
reiserx, I do respect your opinion and we’re sorry that your problem was caused from our end, but your situation could also easily be replicated if your provider had a problem and I’m sure they don’t provide redundant connection in that case.
