Expanding the system: replace Vera2 or add a new unit to existing?

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to get some suggestions, success stories, points to ponder, etc. in regards to expanding my HA system. My sense is that my Vera2 is just too overworked: UI5 load times are lengthy (and frequently requiring a reboot) lately, which is a sort of fatal flaw when monitoring the system from outside, e.g. AutHomation (my Android) and Automator.app (the Ms’s iPhone). I have the following devices:

[ul][li]Cameras: 2 Foscam indoor wifi cameras[/li]
[li]Garage door: Everspring Door Sensor and ACT Appliance Module[/li]
[li]HVAC: 2 Trane Thermostats[/li]
[li]Security: 2DS Integration Card (w/ existing DSC box)[/li]
[li]Sensors: 3 Everspring ST812 (water), 1 Everspring ST814 (temp & humidity)[/li]
[li]Switches: 3 GE outdoor, 4 GE indoor (2-way & 3-way), 4 Everspring Lamp modules[/li][/ul]

…with the following plugins running…

[ul][li]DSC Alarm Panel (v.0.38)[/li]
[li]Garage Door (v.1.20)[/li]
[li]WeatherUnderground Weather (v.1.54)[/li]
[li]Day or Night toggle (v.1.1)[/li]
[li]VistaCam PT&HD IP Camera (v.3.0)[/li]
[li]PLEC Core, Switch & Generator (v.4.5)[/li]
[li]dataMine (v.0.90) - with logging to attached USB (verbose logging disabled)[/li]
[li]Combination Switch (v.16.0)[/li]
[li]Virtual On/Off Switches (v.1.32)[/li]
[li]VeraAlerts (v.3.2)[/li][/ul]

Given all of that, it seems as though my options are either to (1) replace my Vera2 with a Vera3, (2) add a new controller to off-load some of the current Vera2 workload, (3) wait for the new Veras to be released, or (4) suffer through it and start downscaling my system.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,
-Mike

I don’t think that you have very many devices, or plugins for that matter. Though I am unfamiliar with the behavior of some of the plugins.

I would start by trying to determine the true cause of the slowness. Is the system actually resource constrained or is there some problem? I would probably install the System Monitor app first and verify available memory and CPU load. If you are experiencing high resource utilization, then I would try eliminating unnecessary services/plugins to see if that that any effect.

Have you looked at the logs to make sure that there are no errors or long waits for problem devices/routes? Are there any fancy/complex scenes/automation or PLEG scripts that are looping or have long waits for events? Are the cameras recording or capturing snapshots? The weather app would be my first plugin deletion, what do you use that for in Vera? I presume it’s summer where you are. Then I might think about datamine as the next troubleshooting deletion.

I would definitely not use multiple Veras for such a small network.
I would consider replacing the Vera 2 with a newer model, but I would also wait for the newest models to drop(hopefully soon) as promised. As previously suggested, I might downscale plugins as a troubleshooting option, but Vera should be able to handle what you’ve got and then some.

Hi

At the recommendation of many I have been using “System Monitor” to get some measure on the performance of my Vera 2. I often get reading such as this:

Mem Available 85416 kilo bytes
CPU Load (1 minute) 1.41
CPU Load (5 minute) 1.17
CPU Load (15 minute) 0.97

Last CMH Reboot 08:07:28 Mon 16 Sep 2013
Last Vera Restart
Last Luup Restart 06:53:02 Mon 11 Nov 2013

Would really like some help interpreting them. I’ve seen CPU loads (when doing a heal) over 2.25

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Don

While your available memory is good, your CPU utilization numbers appear to indicate a problem. Were they taken right after a heal or were they taken, as they should be, at a normal operating state for more than the last 15 minutes?

During normal operation your CPU numbers should be below 1.0. I’d like to see them below 0.5. The numbers you posted indicate that there are a lot of processes waiting for CPU time, up to 2.25 times as many as the CPU can handle. This could happen, though not usually, during a heal and I might not worry about it. But, normal operation should not do this.

Did you try, as I previously suggested, looking at the logs? Are the cameras recording or being displayed in the Vera GUI? Did you eliminate some plugins? What is Datamine monitoring/logging? Did you try disabling datamine?

Actually his available memory is higher than what the Vera 2 comes with. Vera 2 has 32MB of built in storage. Not sure how it reports almost 4 times the built in amount. Are you running swap? You cpu values are pretty high. Since all Vera’s have a single core, anything over 1 would be taxing it. 1 = 100%. Your 1 minute interval would equal to 141% and so on.
