Energy Monitoring General Discussion

Anyone out there have a comprehensive energy motoring solution for Vera and the energy monitor plug-in?
What devices are out there to measure real time current?

Thanks,
Darrell

Ted5000 (I think MCV wrote a plugin for it)

Aeon power meter:

I have one but its not very well supported at the moment (very basic information) and there is also a firmware issue with it at the moment which we are waiting on a fix for (currently doesn’t update very regularly).

I also think this might be a viable solution if it was open enough to write a plugin for:

There is a Aeon Labs Smart Energy Monitor device that can hook into your main panel and communicate via zwave to vera. However there are issues with the device reporting real time data. There are a few people on the forum that have one and can not get it to work very reliably. Hopefully MCV can work out the kinks.

besides the issues mentioned about the aeon unit, did they ever fix the problem of their clamp not being big enough, or are they handling that on a case by base basis?

They are coming out with a re-designed unit with larger clamps. For those who purchased the original unit and the clamps were too small, they were handling directly.

There is apparently a new ‘smart switch’ being offered for free when you buy a new Vera. This switch states that it is energy monitoring which looks to be correct as it is a pass through (in-line) switch. I will have one hopefully within the next couple of weeks and can give better info after testing.

It will only offer monitoring to the local load plugged into it though.

@ASIhome, Any idea when Aeon are supposed to be bringing out the new firmware for the power meter?

@strangely

Of course I meant it will only monitor the load going through it, but it should monitor the actual load. Unlike current Vera settings which ‘assume’ energy usage from pre-set consumption estimates like a 60Watt bulb dimmed at 50% uses 30Watts…etc…

An update on the AEON would be appreciated.

Will There ever be a way to Integrate the TED 5000 into my Vera?

I think there was a forum thread about a plugin by MCV that they’d worked on in-house, but I never saw any sign of the plugin!
In the end I decided to go with the Aeon solution and look where that got me!

Here’s the thread and post:

Obviously in the same category as conditional logic for scenes and the IR support
