Is this a common problem? I expect e-mails (which I have converted to SMS texts) would come a lot quicker. Both the vera e-mail and text messaging took exactly 20 minutes today.
I’m wondering, Gatorbaw, if you don’t mind my asking:
- Which cellular carrier are you using? (e.g. Sprint, Verizon)
- Which email provider? (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo!)
- Which firmware revision on Vera? (e.g. .862)
When it comes to propagation times for these services, I’ve always felt the “weak link” was my provider(s), so I’ll be interested to see if we have any in common.
Also, I remain at firmware 616 and can definitely say a large portion of Vera’s email notifications do NOT come through, or are seemingly delayed, yet some do appear in a timely fashion. For me, it’s haphazard, though I’ve never reported this problem to MCV.
UPDATE
At 8:28 PM tonight, I received the following (edited for brevity) email notification from FindVera:
Door was unlocked at ‘2009-08-25 20:00:40’
So, that’s about a 25-28 minute delay. Same as your complaint above.
Hi LibraSun:
- I have AT&T with iPhone
- Yahoo mail
- Latest firmware
This was a pre-LUUP problem as well. I see instantaneous e-mails when I buy something online like eBay/PayPal and I have no lag when I text chat with friends on different networks they have. I don’t see how this could be an AT&T or Yahoo mail problem.
What I find interesting is that I get vera’s texts and e-mails at the exact same time.
Hopefully, this will improve, as I am using motion detectors in my house and depending on texts to alert me to intrusion. Users of water leak modules would like immediate notification as well. Also, if these Z-wave smoke detectors come to fruition, 20 minutes is too late!
Thanks for your interest!
UPDATE 2: I use GMail, and T-Mobile (though I don’t currently ask Vera to send me SMS notifications).
If propagation times remain consistently high (>5 minutes), then my dream of “knowing” when housemates/guests have arrived and unlocked the door may be impacted substantially.
I having the same issue on att and gmail. Delays up to 20 mins for email and sms
What is very interesting is that find vera gives a sucess even though the emai does not get sent.
Makes you wonder whether “Success” in this case means “Okay, I placed it in a queue” or “Okay, I did my job by sending it as an email.”
I think you’re implicitly asking, “Does FindVera acknowledge receipt from Vera?” … “How does Vera know the notification(s) got placed on a queue?” … “Is the queue bogging down or dropping items?”
When you get one of these “delayed” emails, look at the “Full Header” view in your email client. This will show you the path the Email took during it’s delivery from ra1.findvera.com to your Email account.
Along with each relay, it captures the [local] timestamp of the SMTP server. From this information you can see each “hop” and should be able to work out whether it’s a collection problem, or a delivery-chain problem.
In a quick review I did, I saw some of them using “outmail”.authsmtp.com servers in the UK… which is odd, but the messages were delivered within a minute or so of the event.
Here’s a snippet of what that looks like:

Today, I ran a ‘test’ by unlocking the front door’s deadbolt, which triggers a scene in Vera, who then sends an email notification.
Results: It took less than 7 seconds for the email to reach my GMail in-box! Wow!!
Either something’s changed for the better, or mid-day is simply a better time to open my door.

Not thinking much of anything. I know there is a big flaw in the system. My email does not work anymore at all because there is a new bug somewhere that does not allow my email because my address is too long… Worked with non Luup. Although there were several FAILS in the log.
What is the point!
Once again, I must commiserate with you: Another “Unlock” event happened at my door at 1:41 PM (CST), and no notification ever appeared, and it’s been well over half an hour.
Tsk tsk. I’m beginning to wonder whether Vera’s not firing the “Send Notification” on those occasions when I re-lock the door quickly (as I did at 1:41 PM). Hmm. Perhaps the deadbolt itself isn’t telling Vera anything under those circumstances.
OK, back to square one. :-/
I guess it is just a sit and wait… I know they will fix it the real issue is when ?
@zmistro, how many days has it been since you filed the formal Ticket/Trouble Report for the “long email address” problem you’re experiencing?
why is that suppose to be a problem.
I have not used the Mantis in a long time.
I have contacted MCV directly. They log into my box.
Why you ask… ???
Hey zmistro,
MCV has indicated they use the information/tickets filed by using Vera’s built in ticketing interface under:
Advanced --> Tech Support
In past discussions, they use this as part of the release criteria, at least by checking the types and number of tickets and whether there’s anything blocking in these.
Filing one of these with the complete details of your issue will likely get eyes on it, as compared to the Forum-based traffic - which has a tendency to get lost in the noise.
They have access to my Vera also, but it doesn’t mean they proactively go look at it to fix stuff.
The more we [all] give them detailed testcases, in the way they’ve asked for them, the more likely we’ll see fixes for our [reproducable] issues.
For some interesting stats, you can use MCV’s and CJ’s public Forum profiles to work out the last time they posted and/or read the forums. I suspect they’re kinda busy, so stuff only discussed here might get lost.
I’ve been experiencing the same type of notification problems since I initially setup my Vera3 a few months ago.
1.) When I manually lock or unlock the door using the deadbolt on my Yale Z-Wave lock, I never get a notification. I called Yale tech support - they stated that a Z-Wave alert would definitely be sent when that happens.
2.) I’ll get notifications emails/text messages at arbitrary times that my doors unlocked. Tonight, I got two unlock notifications for the same door within two minutes of each other. This is extremely frustrating - when I see these & am not at home, I don’t know if they’re something that I should be concerned about or if they’re a false alarm.

Try using a plugin and not the internal notification features of the Vera:
Push Plugin
Twilio Plugin
Do a search of the forums to find them and how to use them.
