My ATT UVerse Internet was out of service for 9 hours yesterday which pushed me over the edge to get a stable backup connection. As I write this it’s out of service again and will be until they dispatch sometime tomorrow, at least another 12 hours. So I need to solve the backup problem which I think I will do with another Internet connection such as cable or wireless. I have a Linksys RV042 dual Internet router that I stopped using when I got uVerse because using the ATT uVerse box as a basic modem in front of a proper router is an absolute pain in the backside. So I can solve the problem but …
The reason for my question is, assuming I go down the dual WAN approach, how will the VERA servers handle such a situation where at any given time my VERAS may appear on different WAN addresses? Will the forwarding servers be able to find mine?
You will have two Public IP addresses … one for each WAN.
When Vera Requests a connection to the server, your router will pick one, depending on the policy you set for selection).
The Remote Software knows hot to contact your Vera through the IP of the tunnel that connected with it.
If that WAN link goes down … Vera should detect this (I do not know how robust this) and create a new tunnel. At that time the router will only have one WAN to use.
I use my mobile Data Plan as a backup …
I actually have a WIFI bridge that is set to listen on my mobile’s HOT Spot Wifi ID … I only turn on my Hotsot at home when my primary network goes down.
That bridge connects to my secondary WAN … and my policy is to ALWAYS use the primary unless it fails and only then to use the secondary.
Thanks Richard, so it should work. I’m thinking of a cheap cable Internet plan, I can get 3MB for $20/ month. Alternately something using my 10gb data plan but I have to work through how to route to that.
