Do I have to rebuild my Vera 3 Z-Wave Network?

If my Vera 3 dies and I have to get a new one, can I restore my Z-Wave network from a backup (from the old unit) or do I have to re-Pair all the devices in my network? What about all the scenes I created, will those need re-creating?

Typically you just restore from the online Backups (presuming you have those enabled) to your new Vera unit (running the same version).

You can also manually backup via the UI at significant points in time, and this can be automated if you’ve permanently decoupled your Vera from the online MiOS services (cp.mios.com et-al).

Vera periodically performs a backup of the Z-Wave module, when it detects a change, and the most recent Z-Wave backup is included in the whole-system backups.

Thanks for your response. When you say the “same version” are you speaking firmware (UI6 vs UI7) or model numel number Vera 2 vs Vera 3?

The same firmware version is required to be able to restore.

That said, if you’ve got a fully populated/busy Vera3 unit, I’d expect that restoring to a VeraLite (or Vera 2) isn’t going to work well for you 8)

Guessed –

So assuming I purchase a new Vera Edge in the future (running UI7) and I am currently running on a Vera3 (UI5) can I reload the Edge from an current MCV backup?

Don

That’s where it starts to get tricky. When the Vera3/VeraLite hardware was released, they shipped with UI5 and weren’t compatible with the predominant firmware of that time (UI4) - mostly because they had a new type of processor (and a new port of Linux)

It took some time for UI5 to stabilize[sup]*[/sup],so a lot of users stayed on UI4.

It’s not clear yet what the baseline firmware requirements are going to be for the new hardware, but an educated guess would be they’ll require UI7 (again, just a guess) in order to keep it simple (from a support perspective).

If you have a box running UI5, and it screws up, then you’d ultimately need another UI5 box to restore to. We’re yet to hear what the unicorn actually supports in terms of firmware releases, so it’s really anyone’s guess at this time.

I keep a spare Vera3 around for just this purpose…

[sup]*[/sup] Anecdotally, just by monitoring the threads for “how do I rollback?” requests.

Guessed

Thanks for the information. Assuming I keep my Vera3 will I be able to restore by UI5/Vera3 backups onto a UI7/Vera Edge box. I know it is speculation at this point… but my guess is that past practices of generating a non-compatible hardware platform (i.e., Vera Edge) will continue making it difficult to migrate to the new hardware from UI5.

Don

Don, from a business perspective it doesn’t make sense to me why Vera wouldn’t let us migrate from a U14/U15/U16 to Vera Edge directly. If their business is to sell more boxes then there is already a very large install base. I’ve read somewhere that there are hundreds of thousands of these Vera units (Lite, 2’s and 3’s) out there already. It’s crazy not to exploit that.

Hi lemrock

I agree but it has never worked that way in the past (when they upgrade to new hardware and a new UI at the same time). If we could only run UI5 on the new Vera Edge (when it comes out that would solve the problem). But downgrading hardware hasn’t been easy either.

Again, this is just speculation at this point.

The process to move across Hardware is typically:

a) Make a configuration backup on the existing Hardware
b) Upgrade the existing Hardware to the new Firmware, matching whatever the new Hardware has.
c) Make another backup from the existing Hardware, now with the new Firmware
d) Restore (c) to the new Hardware.
e) Make an offering to <insert your deity here>

This assumes that the existing Hardware can be upgraded to the new Firmware. in today’s case, that will work for Vera3/VeraLite users, but Vera2 users will be in a pickle.

I think C1 would be to shutdown your old Vera before doing the restore. Otherwise, the Zwave gets a bit confused; I’m still rebuilding. This was a suggestion by support.

Hi guessed

Thanks for the information.

However, a lot if assumptions here. I am hoping MCV cn clearly define an upgrade path from ui5 to ui7 for the new edge. In the past thus hasn't been very clear.

  Don

am hoping so to, not looking forward to re-associating everything again, a upgrade path via export of old config into the veraedge would be great

I did not have any luck with a backup on ui5 veralite to a restore on veraedge ui7

the apps copied over, but not the zwave objects

I will just move items slowly over time, have both systems running now, gives me time to test ui7 before completely making the switch anyways

a upgrade to ui7, then a backup\restore may have worked, but decided not to try it

fyi : after the failed restore, just did a factory reset to start over fresh…

It had been mentioned in several different threads that you should / can not use a UI5 backup to restore to UI7 on Vera Edge. You must upgrade your current vera to UI7 and then do a backup to copy over to the Vera edge.

people had speculated that you may have to upgrade first, it was never confirmed or stated as fact, I was just sharing my experience, as I tried it

I can also confirm Garrett’s statement is fact. In desperation I tried to load my UI5 backup into my Vera3 after I upgraded to UI7 (and it failed to migrate any of my scenes, rooms, devices or plugins)… No z-wave light and LUA froze.

I had a Vera2 on UI5 and migrated to Vera3. I wonder if this is why I keep getting a failure when I try to upgrade the Vera3 to UI7?

GetVera Support has not been very helpful thus far… I really wish I could find the problem (in my user_data file?) that is crashing during the upgrade process.

UPDATE… as I type this I have two Veras dead…

Vera3 is being upgraded from UI5 to UI7 by tech support (so far they have not completed the task successfully).

VeraEdge is on deck but useless without my existing network file to migrate over!

So I have two gateways and no control of anything now >:( . Hope MCV support can get Vera3 loaded up with UI7 and all of my existing UI5 network content so I can move forward…

Thanks to MCV’s newest firmware (1.7.513), my Vera 3 went to a blinking orange/green. I was running the version immediately before this newest one.

Was unable to do the restore since the recovery tool doesn’t see the Vera to fix it. (yes I changed the ip/network info on my pc) I have a backup unit (new Vera 3 I was setting up for my father) and decided to try and use that. It automatically updated itself to the newest firmware. Did a restore from the backup I made right before I did the update (now 3 hours ago) and checked the box to restore z-wave network.
I see all the devices, however EVERY one of them says it can’t get info from the node. I have A LOT of zwave devices. I am NOT interested in re-doing this all over again. Now what?

Raise a support ticket or ring them.

The MCV support do not directly monitor the forum but you might be lucky as some of the MCV staff are now more activity but not a certainly always.
