Dimmable Vertical Fan

I was looking to add a fan to my bedroom. I have an existing unit but it makes weird noises when I dim the Z-Wave module (Aeotec Smart Switch). Also, the fan stays off after the power is cut…so I would need an IR blaster to turn it on.

Instead of an IR blaster, I was thinking of using a cheaper, hard switch (no fancy electronics), vertical fan that can be dimmed.

Are the weird humming noises when I dim the electronic…or can you not dim a fan?

Sorry if this is a basic electrical question. I thought it would work with my existing fan.

Most fans use induction motors which cannot be dimmed.

Thanks Rex, using your search terms, I found out more details on why this is a bad idea.

Well, if someone made a low-cost Z-wave compatible variable frequency drive…

Would this work?

The original switch was a 4 position (three speeds and off) switch? This is meant to replace that type of switch.

There may be wiring in the wall for it if you originally has a single pole switch and were using the chain to set the speed.

so the answer is: “it depends” as so many home automation questions tend to get answered.

Otherwise stick it in a closed dual gang enclosure with a 120v cord and outlet, and hey-presto same thing really

Once you mount the fan controler in there, just need to then add an outlet, a dual gang decora face-plate, and way to secure a cord through the side, for which there are few options.
