Dashboard loads very slowly

On my personal system my dashboard takes a bit to long in loading. I just updated to UI5 but I also added 8 cameras I did not have before.

Could it be that my memory is at its limit? How can i tell if my memory is maxed-out?

would a usb dongle help speed it up?

thanks

A little more information on your vera. I would assume you are on a vera 2 since you said you upgraded? You can install the system monitor plugin to get some information on your vera. Other methods require using ssh access.

Yes, I am on Vera2 UI5 1.5.622.

This from the system monitor plugin:
i accidentally was working with a clients setupo and not my own in question. Here is mine

Set logging to USB and/or creating a usb swapfile may assist in the performance:

thanks Brientim. does it look like i need it? The system monitor data has no relative meaning to me. Would a usb stick even help an empty/deviceless unit?

It is extremely hard to state one way or the other but the fundamental point is the performance impact is really the only way to determine whether it is effective. History has shown there is performance improvement and some times very dramatic improvement but it really depends on what apps are installed and process running etc.

You load is very high. It is showing 1.55. Which means it is running 155% of the system. If you can log into your Vera via ssh and run top to see what process is taxing the system (e.g. are there any processes showing 100% usage). This will tell you what the culprit is.

I want to try this. You simply type “top”? Is there also a command to kill a process? Thx

Upgrading to UI5 may add some load, but it is unlikely to add too much load to your system.

8 cameras I did not have before.

This would be where I look first.

Are all 8 cameras on your Dashboard?
Have you tried eliminating a few cameras and seeing how much difference it makes?
Which streams are you connecting to, SD or HD?
Are you recording/archiving images?

Are there a lot of other devices and plugins?

I unpinned the cameras from the dash and it still takes forever to load. CPU load is no better.

Yes, all cameras are on the dashboard. Other than the cameras i don’t have to many devices.
2 thermostats
3 appliance modules
5 receptacles
5 light switches
2 yale locks
1 scene controller

Plugins:
weather
basic mobile web interface
smartphone web interface
foscam
system monitor
mios update utility

I also have 11 scenes

Can someone point me in to where i can find instructions on how to “log into vera via ssh”

Can you reccomend the best possible usb external device to use for storage ?

thanks

My load is down now. Not sure if it was unpinning the cameras or what?

Looks a lot better. Has response gotten better?

not really, it is still slow to load. I have a vera lite I never sold i might transfer to.

We must put the report into context that there was a peak load in the last minute and high before that in the previous 5 minutes etc. What it does not show is memory usage over the same period and this is a where performance degradation has really been identified as a key concern.

So even though the cou usage is down, there is no indication of when you do something what impact you have on the ram allocation. In addition, if you are using the dashboard /overview it require a lot of background data which will use a fair amount of both CPU and ram. You can do some limited customisation and switch stuff on and off to see the impact if desired.

The off loading of logging and the adding the swapfile allows more allocation of resources to a task or a process. Early in UI5 on Vera 2 camera plug in where a concern and there were issues with plugin 5 and 7 which were later resolved, the loaded plugins for camera were utilising about 15% of resources for a camera but it isn’t linear usage (8 does not equate to 120%) however they still use a lot of resources overall. Albeit, one or eight cameras, it you should see an improvement if you add a swapfile. Any USB stick should do, you do not need a large one either.

A Vera lite should have no issues with the list of devices you specified so if you want save time, it would be a good idea.

thank you.

I am going to go ahead and use the vera Lite I have. would using a usb on that make that even faster? does vera lite have usb 3.0?

A USB drive adds mini solid state disk that is used to write files.
Without it it writes the log into existing Vera memory. That reduces the memory
available for useful things. So a USB drive will improve the performance and reliability for ALL Vera2, Vera Lite, and Vera3 units. It’s more useful as you start using more memory.

I moved to veraLite from vera 2 and added a usb drive. My dash loads way faster.

new system monitor stats:

Glad to see the upgrade went well and the performance of the Vera Lite make it worth the effort.
