I am trying to decide on what thermostat to go with. I like the idea of the self learning of the nest, but don’t want the nest due to problems that I read about (maybe they have worked it out by now?). I need it to integrate into the vera network. I have two in the house, can they be linked so that they work together? We have a problem now where one unit will run and since it is cooling it keeps the temperature of the other thermostat barely below the set point so that it never comes on to help. So the result is one of the units runs most of the day trying to cool the whole house.
I would love it to be able to remind me when to change filters. Thanks!
My Nest has been very reliable and predictable, so I’m not sure what problems you had heard about.
If you don’t want the Nest, the new ecobee3 really sounds like what you want, except it’s smart in a way that’s different from how Nest does “learning.” It does filter reminders and lots of other notifications, has a schedule that’s easy to tune, home, away and vacation modes, and native mobile apps and web console. Its best feature for you is probably the wireless remote sensors that tell the thermostat to reach the desired temperature for where people are in the house, not just where the thermostat is mounted. You can even create groups of multiple thermostats to update all thermostats in the group when you change certain settings on one. The ecobee3 is really worth a look. Both Nest and Ecobee have plugins.
There are over 2500 reviews of the Nest thermostat on Amazon, including a significant number of poor reviews. Some of the poor reviews are cause for significant concern - particularly those describing failure modes of this thermostat which can result in the heating/cooling system running full time or not at all - potentially for days if you are away from your home. It was for this reason alone that I decided against use of this thermostat.

Fair enough! A large body of bad reviews should give anyone pause.
