If I’m using the c wire, should I also install batteries? The manual is unclear, doesn’t really say what advantage installing the batteries would do for me. If the power goes off, my HVAC system won’t run anyway. Does installing the batteries preserve settings or something if power is off for extended time? Thanks!
Typically you should not need them, but have no direct experience with the CT100

The batteries are for backup so your settings don’t reset, typical of most. I have the same CT-100. Test it for yourself…turn the breaker off without batteries.
I do have a couple of CT100 thermostats, and have the C wire connected to them. I run without batteries as otherwise I would need to replace the batteries occasionally so they will not corrode.
Also, in that way I get alerted right away if power to the thermostat goes away, which indicates some problem with my heatpumps.
Yes, you need to run the batteries in order to preserve the local settings in case of a long term power outage. If you don’t care about this, then no batteries necessary.
