Creating A Dynamic/interactive UI (With Automatic Background Changes)

Hi Intveltr

I nope you are sitting down, i’m thinking out loud again

Here is what I’d like to do with HomeWave (something for the roadmap), I’d like to have the screen feel more visually dynamic - and here is what I had in mind.

  1. take a photo of my conservatory sofa, which has a lamp either side in shot, which I want to control.
  2. using the photo as the background and make invisible socket swithes/buttons where the lamps are
  3. when I click on the right lamp it activates the switch in the Normal way, but the background image is also updated to show that the lamp is on.
  4. Same as above if I click the left lamp
  5. The background image would know the state of the lights and adjust the background image to give a visual representation of the lights that are on in the room.

It would require me to take 4 pictures

1 - no lights on
2 - just the left lamp on
3 - just the right lamp on
4 - both lamps on.

If left lamp is on and right lamp is off, show background picture number 2

Currently a landscape photo taken on the iPad is not the correct resolution for the app, what resolution is required or can you allow pinch and resize functionality at some point ?

You could do it also having a different icon for light on and light off. In this way you don’t have to upload different background. Maybe it is also easier to develop.
Good idea!

Cool idea … but to do this generally would require:

  1. An easy way to generate a 3D model of your house
  2. There are plenty of plugins/sensors to provide environment input to the model:
Day, Night, Weather, Temperature, Humidity, …
  3. A library of devices that can be placed into the model that can have their state changed:
Lights - as you indicate showing dim level
Sensors (Flash Red when activated next to the window/door, footprints for motion, …)
    Fans - Showing speed
Shades show status or view of outside (With background defined by environmental model)
    Doors showing opened or closed
Multi Media Equipment (TVs, DVRs, Sound Systems, …)
    Alarm,

    Wall clock showing time …
A Wall thermostat to show the HVAC settings.

Why stop at display … why not just interact with the graphical objects to control Vera!
Some day … maybe UI6

Thanks @teonebello

I like to challenge Intveltr

I’m trying not to wish/push for too many things… The other idea i have is this - As i use the main control screen as buttons/links to the rooms in my house; rather than having just the one device screen/page off the back of a control button which it does now; i’d like to have the ability to add more pages.

Hi @R.T.S

Now that would be cool !!

Sadly back to reality, and keeping it simple for Inveltr to even consider  my idea might be achievable on a small scale, maybe by adding a new option against each binary device to allow you to ‘Change Background When On’ - ok, now i’m not sure how it would factor in another devicd value to show a third potential background… One for the experts …

Either way, changing backgrounds as well as icons for changes in both single or multiple device activities would be awesome ! ;).

Changing backgrounds on controls is not too hard to add.

I’ll look at the resolution issue.

http://www.openremote.org/display/HOME/OpenRemote does this.

And on http://www.floorplanner.com/ you can create a fancy 3d look of your home…
