checking error logs for evidence of crash or restarting

Hi,

I thought I’d start a new thread since the title of the last one wasn’t accurate any longer, so, I’m fairly sure my ver2 is regularly restarting although I’m only noticing this when I try to talk to it and it doesn’t respond, so I check the lights on the box and they are all off except for power, just like when you restart the box, then z wave and ethernet come on after what looks like the right amount of time for a restart.

My question is what logs can I look at to see if it really is restarting and what might be casuing it, none of the ones in /tmp seem to show anything meaningful related to the problem. Is there an obvious way to check uptime even, that I’m missing?

Thanks in advance.

ok, hmmm, I found a file called /proc/uptime which when I cat shows a count of seconds which ties in to the last time I saw the system restart, so it looks like my system is restarting, now I just need to find out why…

found this http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php?topic=4218.0 after searching for reboot on the forums, in case anyone else is having this problem.

I’m surprised no-one mentioned this if the latest firmware is having these problems and peeps know the workaround for now.

Is it only affecting a few peeps?

‘uptime’ is a unix/linux command.

I don’t see how, this issue refers to firmware 1.1.047 which is the latest and still being pumped down by MCV when you check the latest firmware on the device.

So, I’m running 1.1.047 currently and seeing the reboots but I’m going to follow the steps in the post to regress to the previous version.

1.1.1047 is old, you should visit the upgrade URL below to get the latest. See also the Official announcement.

Thanks, I just did that, but it’s beta firmware and I think it’s a bit odd that MCV expect customers to load this way but still pump a pretty ropey version down the automatic method.

I’m happy to do this myself but if they want this to be accepted as a consumer device they may have to change their approach in order to raise customer expectations of the quality product.

1.1.1047 was also a beta  The new versions are streets ahead!

;D yes, of course but the internal method on the vera for checking and upgrading the firmware still loads it, which kind of makes you feel that it’s what MCV want you to run, I didn’t actually realise that they expected me to load the firmware with another method (hey, the documentation is rubbish while we’re here).

Thanks, of course, to you lovely fellows on this forum though, I’ve picked all sorts of really fab and interesting information and am thoroughly enjoying playing with my vera 8)

(inluding -uptime- is a command, thanks oTi !!)

At some point in time (when they deem it to be stable… enough), then they’ll set it to tell you theres an upgrade available in your dashboard.

yes, but I think the fact that my vera previously kept rebooting itself is quite fundamental to my perception of its quality as a whole and that they should probably remove the 1.1047 firmware and replace with one that doesn’t keep rebooting.

Having said that though, I notice from the wiki that one ofthe things fixed is a propensity to reboot if you have a Sonos device on the network, which I do and I guess not everyone will have, so I guess I’m saying and was previously asking, is that if everyone is/was experiencing this problem then they should remove the older firmware, if it’s just Sonos users then I guess that’s different.

Thanks for your replies b.t.w.

@strangely

Do you know if 1.1.1229 is a beta version or is it an official release?

Your version: 1.1.1186
Upgrading to: http://download1.mios.com/firmware/wl500gP_Luup_ui4-1.1.1229-1.squashfs

It’s an official beta

There used to be two upgrade URLs, one used to give the latest official beta and the other would give a more advanced version; however this is the only one I’ve seen recently, and as it’s the same one posted in the official announcements section, and therefore publicly available, then it has to be buyer beware I guess!

haha!!! lmao! I hear that, mann. My Z wave network is small any way, so i doubt i’ll see that much of a negative impact. I kinda jumped on the install, too late to turn back now. If I notice anything out of the ordinary I’ll be sure to post what the issue is so that it is known about if it isn’t already known.
