Cheap WiFi IP cam

I have two of the wired versions of these.
Very basic features but for $65 its a good deal I think for anyone wanting to get on the IP cam train!

Sure can’t beat the price!

I now have a total of 8 Panasonic pan/tilt cameras operating with Vera, but if I needed a cheap non-motorized camera, I’d consider something like this one, if the picture quality is good.

Wow, you are quite the “Big Brother” Vera user!

PQ isn’t that bad considering. Its not quite on par with my Panasonic but I can post a picture for you if you want it?

I’d love to see the PQ difference between the two. I’m using 4 Linksys cams which fall between the inexpensive Trendnet and the Panasonic p/t/z which would require a 2nd mortgage on my house.

Here is a pic from the trendnet through a window on an overcast day and also one of my AV shelf where Vera lives.

edit

Added picture from Panasonic also which is never good this time of day due to the light coming in through the window.

Looks like pretty decent picture quality to me. Not as clear as the higher end Panasonics, but the cheaper Panasonics are pretty similar, in my opinion.

I’m out of town a lot, so I like being able to check on the house while away. I suppose 8 cameras is overkll, but technology is my weakness!

Great Pix!

While I am starting to see the Panasonic PTZ’s come down in price a little, I have to say how impressed I am with the Foscam PTZ I just got. For me, setup was a breeze. I am now using it WiFi on Vera with no issues and the picture quality is just great.

I owned the Panasonic PTZ and returned it, but I must have had a bad one because of the noise it made during pan and tilt. The Foscam is like butter, it really moves quietly and smoothly. I may have an untrained eye as far as PQ goes, but it looks great to me and seems to do a bit better for low light than the Panasonic. The other advantage is the IR nightvision, but this has its drawbacks in that if you have it mounted inside looking through a window, the IR just reflects right back and washes out the pic.

Can’t wait for full motion video stream in Vera and SQ Remote!

Great price but it looks like this requires ActiveX support just like the 100 version.

I have one of these. To set up motion detection it does require ActiveX, which I have never done since I don’t currently own any Windows machines. It does support a native Java client for non-IE browsers. There are also URLs available for direct JPEG and MJPEG (note: their MJPEG stream is not standard. it skips some multi-part headers and adds some bogus JPEG data). However I use mine with Zoneminder and it works fine. Haven’t setup any cameras with Vera yet.

FWIW I also have a IP100-N (I have the non-wireless) model which I think has a better picture, allows anonymous access, and streams MJPEG correctly so you can go directly to that URL in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.

They are Vera compatible with the generic camera plugin as attached just add the following to the URL field in advanced:
cgi/jpg/image.cgi along with your camera username etc

Hey Shady…which foscam did you get?
I’d like to get one or two cameras…

By the way tiger direct has them for 59.99.

Ends up being $0.11 more from Tiger Direct with shipping to my place.

I got the FI 8908W discussed here (despite people’s problems):

modifying the plug-in here:

I’ll try to upload some pix from this thing at some point, but I doubt they’d look any different than any other 640 x 480 ones posted. The thing that surprised me was the quiet, smooth tilting which would be perfect for a nursery, kid cam. I am thinking these are cheap enough to try an mount one under an eve of the roof to see how it stands the elements. I live in a pretty mild climate, so in the right spot I’d hope it would last. I don’t have a big need for interior cams yet.

Make sure to buy from someone who is selling Foscam and has decent reviews…I wasn’t disappointed…yet at least.

Thank you sir

I bought mine from www.ipcam-central.com. its an original foscam, not fake, and at least they responded to all my setup questions. So I got it running pretty fast

@mvakoc:

You posted '‘There are also URLs available for direct JPEG and MJPEG’

I see ‘…cgi/jpg/image.cgi’ to get an image; do you happen to know the URL to get a MJPEG feed ?

Many thanks !

Thanks Shady,

Your .xml file worked first time and now i have full control of my Foscam FI8918W

Cheers

oopps i spoke too soon, went to make a drink and now its stopped tilting???

Re loaded the plugin and after adding the details of my camera reloaded shadies .xml file. Again all worked well for a while and then after leaving it for 10mins, it stopped working again

Glad to hear you got it working. Are you sure the pan tilt isn’t working because it can be slow to respond through Vera. Have you tried accessing the camera directly through a browser? Also the zoom buttons in Vera should make the camera Patrol, which is like an auto-pan/tilt movement, does that work?

It could be a browser issue, maybe.

Hi Shady,

Foscam continues to work well through its own web page and when first setup works very well through Vera 2 UI4 and iVera on my iPhone. But as soon as i stop using it, for any length of time, the PAN TILT stops responding. I’ll have a play around with it today!!!

Cheers
