Can you control Serial to IP devices directly from Vera?

I’m not sure I have the terminology correct.

I’d like to be able to automate control of my TV (Pioneer Kuro). My version of the TV doesn’t have IP control built in, but I found this thread where people are using Roomie Remote App to control the Pioneer Kuro using the service port + a Serial to IP adapter. Something like this.

I’m trying to figure out. Is a way to add the Pioneer TV to my Vera directly by simply getting a $5 IP2SL adapter?

That is not a serial to ip but rather a serial to cat 5 extender…

There are a number of different brands available such as global cache family. However, the other option is IR control which widens your options including GC, Kira and more. Taking the second may even provide greater options to control other devices at the same time

I think your going to have a hard time to complete your task with your current knowledge. As was already stated that adapter is not a serial to IP.

Vera can control Serial devices. Most common way is serial to USB adapter and plug into the usb port on vera. Alarm panels and many other things use this. The problem comes after making this conenction you need a vera plugin to know what to do with it and how control it. What commands and such. This is no easy task and unless it already exist or you have alot of help from a member much better then most its going to be an uphill battle.

Most common was is to use IR control. With a little reading and some $$ for adapters you should be able to get that up and running. 5.00 cap to accomplish this is going to be a problem tho.

Thanks Brientim and integlikewhoa. Just the feedback I was looking for. Doh-- Of course it is a Serial to Cat5 (and not IP) cable. A “Serial to IP cable” doesn’t make sense. I just cut/paste from another forum and that’s what somebody else had called it.

I’ll return to my original plan (which was researching IR blaster options). I actually have ordered the Roomie Blaster, which is supposed to be a slightly enhanced GC iTach with Roomie mods. Hopefully it works with the iTach Wifi plugin that airedale just released.

I got sidetracked when I read that somebody was able to use the Roomie Remote app to control their Pioneer TV using a simple $5 Serial to Cat5 adapter. I was hoping somebody had developed a vera plugin that would allows this.

Like you, I have a Pioneer Kura Plasma… Great tv by the way. I ended up getting the Roomie App along with the Roomie Blaster with the serial adapter for the Kuro. The Kuro is part of my main home theater. I also have some older components upstairs that aren’t ethernet controllable so for those including an older Pioneer plasma, I used another Roomie Blaster with the IR Control. My Pioneer AV Reciever, Sony Bluray & Directv DVR’s are all ethernet controllable. I have Roomie Remote setup as my main universal remote control. What’s really cool about Roomie is that is also controls all of my Vera switches and any Vera scenes I want to control.

All of my lights are programmed in, my garage door opener, my front door lock, my AC via Vera scenes etc. It is really slick. I have a good night activity programmed in to each Roomie room that shuts down the AV equipment in that room, turns off all the lights, locks the front door etc. All from Roomie Remote. It’s really a slick application once you have it set up and it’s is one of two Apps that we use all the time. The other app is Homewave but Homewave doesn’t control the AV stuff where as Roomie Remote does it all.

Here is a screen shot of my Vera remote in Roomie. The 2nd image is my DirecTV interface in Roomie. You can also see that I have some frequently use Vera activities programmed in there. What’s really cool about Roomie beyond just the Vera control is that you setup activities that can trigger things that include AV Devices as well as Vera. For example, you can hit the Directv button and the TV will turn on, the recievier will turn on then switch to the Directv input, Directv turns on then lights could dim or shut off. Hit Youtube, TV turns on, reciever turns on and switches to the bluray player input, bluray player turns on then toggles to Youtube and the Bluray remote pops up on the Roomie screen. Same with Pandora, Netflix, XM Radio etc. It by far the most flexible and comprehensive universal remote I have ever had and I’ve had them all from expensive marantz ones, harmon, Philips iPront TSi-6400 color touch screen etc. You also get an on tablet TV Guide which is pretty cool too. The only downside (for some) is that Roomie is only compatible with iOS devices. For us that’s not an issue as we have multiple iPads and iPhones. That said, Roomie makes it worth while to have a dedicated iPad if you don’t have one.

You can use an iTach serial connector with iRule - I am sure you can do the same with Roomie. And you can send serial commands directly from Vera - you will just have to use Luup - no plug-in needed.

My QMotion shades, my Panasonic projector, and my Sony A/V receiver are all connected via a serial port to an iTach, and then I send IP commands to the iTach with the serial commands encapsulated…
